Forever Lyrics

Take these roses off of me
Let me live, let me be
for a little while
Let my eyes
see everything and nothing in their time
I do not mind

Who'd have guessed I'd ever learn
To let the walls around me burn
and light up the hillside
My words
I ate them for so long
and nothing changed
it was just the same

And I don't know if you see me here
but I can tell you your face is clear
I will see you...

Chorus:
Forever
Forever
I will see you
Forever
Forever

Call me close once again
Call me teacher, call me friend
Just like the first time
Call my name
it echoes in the walls around this room
it's all you

And I don't know if you hear me there
when it's dark and no one cares
I will hear you...

Forever
Forever
I will hear you
Forever
Forever

And I wanted you to be
Everything to me
And now I've got to learn to carry on
And I know I cannot hide
this emptiness inside
Nothing is the same since you're gone

Send me letters from above
Send me strength, send me love
such sweet love
Sing me songs that echo in my head and in my heart
that's where you are...

And I don't know if you feel me here
I can tell you one thing is clear
I will feel you...

Forever
Forever
I will feel you
Forever
Forever
And I will hear you
Forever
Forever
And I will see you
Forever
Forever

Take these roses off of me
Let me live, let me be

Well, it's fairly obvious that this is about the speaker's wife/girlfriend/partner/whomever dying, but I've got this story I'm positively stuck on so here it goes. Romance between an older guy and a younger girl. The man was basically the girl's mentor in whatever given field and fell in love with her. Girl was smart and ambitious and unsatisfied with donating any portion of her life to anything other than work. Man couldn't understand that at all. Girl left him for a higher position, despite any sacrifice of her "humanity" or what have you ["let my eyes see everything and nothing in their time; i will not mind" - this is the girl speaking, observing people from afar, being detached and fine with it]. "Call me teacher, call me friend"..."Call my name, it echoes in the walls around this room, it's all you," is the man observing how she's risen above and beyond him mentally and being proud though they're not together anymore.

Yeah. So it's pulled out of nowhere and makes very little sense, but there you go.

I think this song is about someone who died maybe his girlfriend, wife, friend or whatever, like when he says "Send me letters from above" above maybe is in heaven

i think he's singing from himself dying. To his girlfriend and telling her its all gonna be ok and that even though he's gone he will be with her forever.

Yeah, I think he's toast too... I think the roses-on-him parts give it away. Though I think this song would have been better if they saved the "roses off of me" part until the end (and didn't say it at the beginning), because then one would have thought that it was his partner who died, when they find out at the end that really, it was him. (This worked well, of course, in the movie "Sixth Sense" and one of the better books in the Goosebumps series, #10 "The Ghost Next Door".) The only part in question is when he says send me letters from above... but perhaps above means above ground, as he has been lowered into it.

I dunno about the man being dead. It sure as hell makse more sense than a few things in my head, but the way he's so adamant about

" And I wanted you to be Everything to me And now I've got to learn to carry on And I know I cannot hide this emptiness inside Nothing is the same since you're gone "

I think the Emptiness inside is pretty easy to work out, and you'd use different words to mean the same thing if you were dead. Sorry for not adding anything constructive...

I think this song is about a loved one dying,a girlfriend our a wife. "Take these roses off of me Let me live, let me be" doesnt mean he is dead,it may mean he feels dead.he is ready to start moving on,but he wants to make it clear he will never forget her and that while she is gone he still needs her close.

No, I don't think he's the one dying. It's got to be his partner. It's all very sad :( He's just telling her that he'll never forget her and never stop loving her, even though she's gone... forever.

I wish I knew for sure, but to me...I think the song sounds like it's in both perspectives. Both the one who has passed away and the one who was left behind.

This song is one that is very close to heart and had been waiting and wanting to find.

i think he's more dying metaphorically, since the girl he loves him. he's dying and empty inside.

I think the girl does not realize how much he loves her when he says

'And I don't know if you see me here but I can tell you your face is clear I will see you... '

the guy might have took her for granted or didn't show her how much she meant to him, and he doesn't know if she still loves him back.

"Send me letters from above" ...maybe he thinks of her as his angel....?

This has to be one of VH's most moving, beautiful songs to date...

I think the first 2 verses are from the point of view of the dead. The last verse is a bit ambiguous (the line "I don't know if you feel me here/I can tell you one thing is clear, I will feel you..." could be sung by either person.

Again, an incredibly moving song in ANY context.
