Don't Let Me Die Still Wondering Lyrics
I walk these streets where my soulless feet
Haunt the ground where it was I once tread
On Grafton's Arcade pours the rich commerce rain
Though the voices I no longer hear speak
Heaven's to blame so on that I'll abstain
Best clean the church from my cracked fingernail
But don't let me die still wondering
What it was I left behind
From God's gold plate begrudgers they eat
Till their belly's burst ignorance bliss
Never they roam a wanderless home
Is as far as their sorry eye sees
Give me a rusty ol' goat well trampled and soaked
Until these ashes and blood mingle deep
But don't let me die still wondering
What it was I left behind
Though I've been that face before
Slammed every open door
Squandered once scattered beliefs
So when the waves come crashin' in
I'll swim as the ocean swims
Out with the morning tide
Then back for my tea
So I'll do as I please like the well-tempered breeze
Blowin' which way I see fit
and I'll grey with the clay seven days till the day
When they throw me on the potter's scrap heap
But take my advice; you'll have to bury me twice
Cause the first time I won't rest easily
But don't let me die still wondering
What it was I left behind
So don't let me die still wondering
What it was I left behind
I want a race well run ahead of the gun
With a dance before the far finish line
So no life long regrets, only well feathered steps
Until these shoes I can no longer shine
But don't let me die still wonderin'
For the love I left behind
Haunt the ground where it was I once tread
On Grafton's Arcade pours the rich commerce rain
Though the voices I no longer hear speak
Heaven's to blame so on that I'll abstain
Best clean the church from my cracked fingernail
But don't let me die still wondering
What it was I left behind
Till their belly's burst ignorance bliss
Never they roam a wanderless home
Is as far as their sorry eye sees
Give me a rusty ol' goat well trampled and soaked
Until these ashes and blood mingle deep
But don't let me die still wondering
What it was I left behind

So when the waves come crashin' in
I'll swim as the ocean swims

But don't let me die still wonderin'
For the love I left behind

This song is absolutely beautiful. I read in an interview that the lyrical basis for this song was inspired after the loss of Johnny Cash. It's a song about living life to the fullest, leaving behind no regrets as you lay in waiting on your death bed.
I love this song.. it is my favourite on Within a Mile of Home, and one of my favourites of this band. The trumpet and everything is just beautiful
This is the absolute best song on Within A Mile of Home. I'm really surprised that no one really pays attention to it. It's so beautiful...
This song is amazing. The lyrics get to me everytime I listen to it. It's just one of those songs that I can apply to my life. This song definatly needs more respect.
This song (which I'm listening to right now) is so much about living life to one's fullest extent and with no question left unanswered. My favorite line in the song is "Heaven's to blame, but on that I'll abstain/best clean the church from my cracked fingernail", which is so awesome because Dave was raised Catholic, a Christian belief system which basically prohibits being inquisitive and rebelious.
I took this song to be more about traveling or aimless wandering. The total freedom of being able to go anywhere you want at a moment's notice is very tempting, but there's also a part of you that wants to stay put and not miss anything that's going on right in front of you. Even if you do go and live without a home, you still wonder what you left behind.
I really love this song. It's the perfect ending to the disk, what with it starting out softly, and ending so fully. But, Naijdlizwei, I don't really think that was a trumpet. I happen to be listening to it right now, and I would know trumpet, because I'm taking lessons. But, just to reiterate, it is an absolutely beautiful song!
