Narc Lyrics

Touch your thighs, I'm the lonely one
Remember that last sweat ‘cause that was the right one
Oh, all your mysteries are moving in the sun
And show some love and respect
Wanna get some love and respect
Baby, you can see that the gazing eye won't lie
Don't give up your lover tonight
Cause it's just you, me and this wire, all right
Let's tend to the engine tonight
Look out
She found a lonely sound
She keeps on waiting for time out there
Oh love, can you love me, babe?
Love, is this loving, babe?
Is time turning around?

Feast your eyes, I'm the only one
Control me, console me
Cause that's just how it should be done
Oh, all your history's like fire from a busted gun
I show some love and respect
Don't wanna get a life of regret

But, baby, you can see that the gazing eye won't lie
Don't give up your lover tonight
Look out

She found a lonely sound
She keeps on waiting for time out there
Oh love, can you love me, babe?
Love, is this loving, babe?
Is time turning around?

We slip into the bedroom
Babe, you know me
This is alright
Holdings we'll make soon will
Sustain us through the night
Inside my bedroom baby
Touch me, Oh tonight
Poses will make soon
Will reveal our sense of right

You should be in my space
You should be in my life
You should be in my space
You should be in my life
You could be in my space

this is what paul had to say about narc: “It’s a very typical love and relationships orientated song but with a filter of corruption and manipulation. It's not a healthy depiction of a relationship." "In the States a narc is an undercover narcotics agent, hence the manipulation - using leverage to say someone’s committed a crime. But it utilises that power in a really sleazy, sexual kind of way.”

This song is clearly about sex and hooking up. I've often felt that life can get pretty lonely and boring if you can't find a connection with the opposite sex, i.e. "She found a lonely sound She keeps on waiting for time out there Oh love, can you love me, babe? Love, is this loving, babe? Is time turning around?"

This girl is in a sexual relationship with someone and wants it to become something more and obviously he doesn't. So she keeps going from lover to lover, trying to find the perfect soulmate.

But he doesn't exist so she just keeps bouncing back and forth from loveless relationship to the other because she doesn't want to be all alone and she keeps going back to this guy who's singing about her.

My Interpretation

@VeeRon yup. Nailed it.

this song is written from the perspective of someone who suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder [NPD] [they call themselves 'narcs'], who typically have manipulative relationships with their significant others and feel that they are always entitled to attention, on a dime.

they lack empathy and the ability to feel human emotion: 'Love, is this loving, babe?'

they will maintain eye contact with their partner to convince them of the veracity of their claims [of love, concern for their problems etc] but it's just a studied move:

But, baby, you can see that the gazing eye won't lie

of course, they feel they should always be at the center of attention, and without the attention they feel helpless:

Feast your eyes, I'm the only one Control me, console me

again, they view emotions in a coldly detached manner, and simply replicate them in a mechanical manner:

I show some love and respect [rather than actually feeling said love and respect]

I have more examples, but you get the gist

My Interpretation

@teoferrazzi While the other explanations are interesting, this is spot on.

antics grows on me like some kind of crazy fungus. I felt the same as you did at first. I guess i was expecting another Turn on the the Bright Lights. But this one is great in its own rights. The song and A Time to Be so Small are my favorites.

one idea.

"Oh, all your history's like fire from a busted gun" -the girl is talking too much (about her personal stories-nonsense)and fast to distract him and his sexual intent.

"I show some love and respect" maybe he's in edge.he wants to reach his aim, to sleep with her.he's proactive and "shows love" with a kiss to stop her talking, but not in a pushy way.

this song is to me about manipulation obviously. doesn't have to be about drugs or sex. why would an artist write a song in a straight forward manner? songs are never about what you think they mean on the surface. Regardless of the actual supposed quote from him, the great thing about music is sometimes you can interpret it on a deeper level than even the artist themselves intended.

Regardless of any of the lyrics before or after "just you , me and this wire" has to be one of the greatest lyrics to describe what goes on in dysfunctional relationships. It doesn't even have to be a dysfunctional relationship, it can be that both or only one of the people in it are themselves dysfunctional. Wire is obviously the metaphor for "hearing in on" or someone or something inside one of them telling one of them to say or act a certain way to try to retrieve certain words or actions that are desired out of the other person, something we all find ourselves doing. Its a metaphor for either not being able to be yourself, hiding something, or trying to get out of the person something you desire but have to go to great clever lengths to do so. But mainly its a metaphor for the many layers of subconscious manipulation that go on for both parties in a relationship with unbalanced power dynamics. it touches on the notion of a feeling of being fooled, but being aware of it. "the gazing eye wont lie" "she found a lonely sound" things are questionable nonverbally but they would rather acknowledge that everything's ok with how they act on the outside-"poses we'll make soon will reveal our sense of right." But like some narcs..at somepoint(s) their true nature is revealed, not necessarily for better or worse, just because the truth is hard to hide. " you should be in my space, you should be in my life" does seem to be a positive note though of wanting to share your true self with someone rather than being strangers together.

This song is obviously about 2 people that are having an affair. They are in the same circle of friends, or possibly coworkers. They're both in committed relationships, but their lust and attraction for each other made this an accident waiting to happen...

See below...

Touch your thighs, I'm the lonely one (she's subtly teasing him in front of others and he feels irritated by it) Remember that last sweat ‘cause that was the right one (he thinks of the steamy times they've had sneaking around...) Oh, all your mysteries are moving in the sun (he's blinded by this attraction) And show some love and respect Wanna get some love and respect (he's angry because despite his attraction for her, he still loves another and this girl is in denial of that) Baby, you can see that the gazing eye won't lie (they exchange "knowing" looks in public places) Don't give up your lover tonight (He doesn't want her to do anything that will expose this affair) Cause it's just you, me and this wire, all right Let's tend to the engine tonight (This is about trying to fix (end) this matter over the phone) Look out She found a lonely sound (he's being quiet on the other end of the line) She keeps on waiting for time out there Oh love, can you love me, babe? Love, is this loving, babe? (This girl loves this guy and tries to convince him he loves her back...) Is time turning around? (He wants her to understand that maybe in an alternate past this could have worked out)

Feast your eyes, I'm the only one (He kinda relishes in the fact that she's hooked) Control me, console me Cause that's just how it should be done (This is a description of their turbulent "romance") Oh, all your history's like fire from a busted gun (He really doesn't give a crap about her problems, past or present) I show some love and respect Don't wanna get a life of regret (He is trying to do the right thing and stop doing things he knows he will regret, such as this affair)

We slip into the bedroom Babe, you know me This is alright (He keeps falling back into this same pattern,,,) Holdings we'll make soon will Sustain us through the night Inside my bedroom baby Touch me, Oh tonight Poses will make soon Will reveal our sense of right (It feels SO right, it justifies the wrong)

You should be in my space You should be in my life (This is about her "walking in his shoes" and understanding where he's coming from, not him wanting her as a permanent part of his life)

i like this one, i'd heard some live versions of it before antics... hmm... personally, i can't get used to antics... and yeah, i know it's no turn on the bright lights... i'm just not that impressed by the sort of dancy-popster turn they've taken... but i do like narc... and i like slow hands, though the video isn't my favourite... and take you on a cruise... hmm... i guess antics is growing on me... but anyway, they're playing at the docks in toronto on the 13... and hopefully they'll still do some of their old stuff... namely stella and the specialist...

i like a time to be so small, too... i think those are more like older interpol, because they'd been done before the rest of antics... and i think length of love is older, too...i just found out the interpol concert in toronto is sold out... but i got my tickets ages ago... i so can't deal! also... i've been looking for the ep with song seven on it... but i can't find it anywhere.. i heard they stopped producing it...

Interpol - SongSeven can be obtained by actually buying the new CD antics because it has OpenDisc Tech. which has the songseven on the website. The cd's alright, not amazing.
