So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Wallow in darkness
And ever lasting pain
This signal's defiance
To bring forth mankind's gain
This nation's compliance
To what is fed to them
May lead to disaster
Unless a change is made
I will not be swept aside
Nor will I change inside
But I'll fear not compromise
To benefit mankind
Now pride is our enemy
For salvation this we must believe
Wallow in darkness
And ever lasting pain
This signal's defiance
To bring forth mankind's gain
This nation's compliance
To what is fed to them
May lead to disaster
Unless a change is made
I will not be swept aside
Nor will I change inside
But I'll fear not compromise
To benefit mankind
Now pride is our enemy
For salvation this we must believe
Now pride is our enemy
For salvation this we must believe
Go
I will not be swept aside
I will not be
I will not be swept aside
And ever lasting pain
This signal's defiance
To bring forth mankind's gain
This nation's compliance
To what is fed to them
May lead to disaster
Unless a change is made
I will not be swept aside
Nor will I change inside
But I'll fear not compromise
To benefit mankind
Now pride is our enemy
For salvation this we must believe
Wallow in darkness
And ever lasting pain
This signal's defiance
To bring forth mankind's gain
This nation's compliance
To what is fed to them
May lead to disaster
Unless a change is made
I will not be swept aside
Nor will I change inside
But I'll fear not compromise
To benefit mankind
Now pride is our enemy
For salvation this we must believe
Now pride is our enemy
For salvation this we must believe
Go
I will not be swept aside
I will not be
I will not be swept aside

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
I dont get how people Hate ATR and like IF? or visa versa??? they are both awesome and have way different writing techniques. Plus the fact that ones European and ones American this causes completely different ideals on music and the way lyrics are written. Nvm most of IF earlier stuff was written in Swedish (i think?) and then translated to English which causes some lyrics to be downgraded in a sense....
anyway great song by a great band xDD
hm Good song. It's about how our world is going to go to hell if we don't make some changes. People believe whatever they're told and some of us are so fricken full of ourselves. He's saying he's not going to sit down while we destroy ourselves.
these lyrics suck ass... this band is a big fuckin rip off, so unoriginal... might as well be listening to in flames with bad screaming.
Hey ImpaledOnion, I got news for you-Phil Labonte was cutting records with Shadows Fall before In Flames was even playing at open mic night in the local coffee shop! So who's ripping off who?
Ok, just so I don't look like a jackass, there was an earlier comment by a guy who called this band an In Flames ripoff. I put him in his place, and now his fuckin' comment is gone. Go figure.
nah dude, I still see his comment. what a nub-cake eh? lol.
First off, VERY nice work SwiftImmortal_1, haha. ok and to the song, great song, I have a bit of a feeling its kind of about the world in general but even more specifically its about America because he does mention "this nation" and they're an American band, I think he's talking kind of anti-war here possibly as a response to 9-11 and the following war that Bush instituted. I think what's being said here is that the country/world does need to change itsself or just be "swept aside". He's saying that when America/theworld suffers a blow to its ego instead of just retaliating with war, it needs to compromise to find a better solution.
actually In Flames have been aroudn longer then Phil ............. but ya Phil Labonte is a way better artist then any one in In Flames and for the matter........probally one of the best vox in metalcore/metal today!
Dudes Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth is the Best Vox in the DM world >(
Some of All That Remains songs seem to be Christian-Based although, I don't think they are officially a Christian band. But, I believe this song is about how he has received salvation From Jesus.
theres like 2 parts to this song.
i freaking love it.
