I think the woman he is with was not happy with their relationship and she always tells him, which would bring down his self-esteem, and then they break up and he meets this other woman, and he is so sure that they too will end up like that.
I think that belleautumn is on the right track. But I don't think he's lost hope for the next girl, I think he actually really adores her, and is trying to make sure what happened with his previous relationship doesn't happen with her.

I think this song is about a long term relationship gone wrong. There are mixed feelings, narrator obviously still has feelings for her and doesnt want the relationship to end, even though it probably should. To me "This relationship is based on what trails across the CD case" refers more to him being in a band and what that entails (taveling, roadies etc) as oppose to a drug reference.
Also, lyrics are incomplete. That irks me. Anyone else?
