Within a Mile of Home Lyrics

Dust falls on the empty halls of my old school
Where the memories fade like the casualty, a forgotten fool
Now wide-eyed has become the blind unspoken rule
Deeper only deep is now the word
The lesson's not the answer you once heard

Don't turn your back on me, don't ever let me down
She said, I picked you up each time before you hit the ground
Your selfish face is now erased when someone mentions you
And the darkness that you left has all but stepped aside
With disappearing clouds, the sun arrives
Within a mile of home
Within a mile of home

Oh worry, oh my worry, has it been that long?
The whistle keeps on blowing but the tune's long gone
His empty frame cannot explain, there's nothing left inside
So sing to me a song from yesterday
When laughter filled the tears that we now make

Don't turn your back on me, don't ever let me down
She said, I picked you up each time before you hit the ground
Your selfish face is now erased when someone mentions you
If only you had seen what I now see
And turned the corner where you would have been
Within a mile of home
Within a mile of home

So sing to me, sing me a song, a song from yesterday
When the laughter drank these tears before the promises that now slip away

Don't turn your back on me
Don't turn your back on me, don't ever let me down
Don't turn your back on me
Don't turn your back on me, don't ever let me down
We are within a mile
We are within a mile, within a mile of home
We are within a mile
We are within a mile, within a mile of home
We are within a mile (within a mile)
We are within a mile, within a mile of home
We are within a mile (within a mile)
We are within a mile, within a mile of home
(Take me home)

Yeah, this is a great song for graduation/the end of a long streak of depressing events. I agree that this is possibly the best song on the album

There are some mistakes in the lyrics, it is

"the blind unspoken rule" not "the blind of spoken rule",

"deeper only deep is now the word" not "as equal only deep is now the word",

"has all but stepped aside" not "is overstepped aside",

"with disappearing clouds the sun arrives" not "will disappear in clouds, the sun arrives",

"the whistle keeps on blowing but the tune's long gone" not "the chill's all gone",

"before the promises that now slip away" not "before the promises then they'll slip away"

I think this is a fara more upbeat song carrying the same message as "The Son Never Shines on Closed Doors".

It's about Dave's anguish of having been gone from Ireland for so long.

When saying: "Don't turn your back on me Don't ever let me down"...

It could be him talking to his home/homeland/family?... or his home/homeland/family? talking to him.

Either way, all is forgiven as a return nears... "Within a mile of home"

I take on a meaning that isnt meant at all but makes the song so much more beautiful.

I think within a mile of home could stand for death an goin to heaven.

ive been listening to the song all day as my step dads on his death bed in the other room.

an forever will i remember my mom lookin into his crippled an dumbfounded eyes telling him were almost there, itll all be over soon, everytime i hear the phrase within a mile of home.

hes gotten to the point were he cant even communicate with the world besides moans an gurgles. (note im not christian) (i think gods a whinny lil bitch an is about the same as the devil only optimistic) (an have always thought that)

Yay for the first song I ever learned on the guitar. It could mean any of a number of a things, in my mind, but I think the general idea is summed up in the first line of the chorus : "Don't turn your back on me, don't ever let me down". It's about long friendships, and always having your friend / lover there to support you.

This song has quite deep meaning even though the main idea is right in the title. Within a mile of home is just that. No matter where you are, who you're with, what you're doing, you can always be within a mile of home at heart.

very moving lyrics. you can imagine Dave King's emotions of having to stay in the US due to emigration issues. His widowed mother was alone in Ireland and then had a series of strokes. After 8 years he returned but she didn't know who he was. tough story but that's the stuff that really drives great writing. "Don't turn your back on me. Don't ever let me down. She said, I picked you up before you ever hit the ground..." etc.
