Although many people say not every song from the ashes of the wake is about the iraqi war, i personally think this porsion of the song touches on the iraqi war

I think this portion is about the lies Bush's administration have kept telling and telling till you dont know what to believe anymore cause its 'intertwinded in the system'.

"Justify what I've become, sanctify what I've become" When he says that part......kick ass part of the song.

I think its about soldiers, as almost the entire album "ashes of the wake" is about war. To be specific: about american soldiers who fought in iraque. To be short about this song, its about american soldiers who fought in iraque and who aren't happy about the fight. They try to justify what they have become but instead its betrayal to their own moralitys

i too have a strong feeling this is about the war in iraq. but my idea may be a little different then the rest of you.

its just a thought but this could be the song that lamb of god supports the troops. i feel that randy is saying what a lot of soldiers wish they could say. how at the begining of the war we had a reason but any more whats the sense of being there. bush got everyone excited to go defend our country after what alquada did on 9/11 and convinced us that we needed to stop what they were doing. but very quickly we went to war with iraq for the sole purpose of them having more powerful weapons then what we want them to have. and he kept getting more and more of our young men to go over there and defend our country by telling them lies that they are a threat when really all he wanted was to make us look like more sound of a nation then they were by fixing theirs. i believe my idea on this is supported in the line "Take your place in line to be ground by the gears of the masterpiece" moking what bush did saying that every other nation needs to get ready for us to do what he tried to do to iraq, shaping them into more of a nation like ours the "masterpiece"

I personally think this is about war in a more general sense. I believe the Iraq war is part of this song but it is commenting on some parts of war that have repeated themselves throughout history.

The first three lines talking about men, most likely soldiers, who are now worn down and following orders but without much thought involved (noted from the "blank stares"). This song is also talking about how a war is going on without an "honest reason" (which points to the fact this song definitely could relate to the Iraq war in some people's minds).

The next few lines are continuing to talk about how the war or wars going on are meaningless and the soldiers have changed roles. Originally supposed to be liberators or heroes they now have become pawns for a higher power who doesn't have honest intentions and they want to understand or "justify" what they've become, which is tools for a leader. (Sanctify what I've become, Justify what I've become).

Next the song talks about how these malicious intentions are trying to be hidden (a race to save face). Also in this line it talks about how the war has gotten out of hand and transformed from a heroic salvation to an oppression of the weak (nothing now is what it was meant to be).

Next, the song is commenting on how soldiers are once again merely instruments of destruction for a dictatorial leader to use for his own benefit and that they will be sacrificed for their mission. This mission is supposed to be some kind of "greater good" but from the tone of the song it sounds like a deception made by the leader for positive reputation.(Take your place in line to be ground by the gears of the masterpiece)

Finally the song repeats a few lines and says "you anoint the king, I'll burn everything else to ashes" which is emphasizing this point that the King or leader is just destroying everything around him for his own personal gain while keeping his own extravagance.

So this song could be about the Iraq war (since many view it as meaningless) or many other wars over the course of history with the same issue of a leader with not so heroic intentions.

But this is just my opinion and I'm probably wrong about most of it but with the vagueness of their lyrics you can get a lot of different meanings out of a Lamb of God song.

I think this song refernces the music industry, and all the bullshit that comes with it.

I think randy is tlakin about the band. They consitently talk about how they never intended on gettin famous and puttin on the show like they have to and make refernces to being bound by the industry thoughout the song. "nothing now is what we meant it to be Pretending I'm still here It's a system now, intertwined Take your place in line to be ground by the gears of the masterpiece."

It's just a reflection of what they've become over the years from a no name metal band from richmond who no one gave a fuck about to the biggest metal band of their time.
