Propaganda Lyrics

jesus christ, what have I done
I find it hard to justify
each time I try to solve just one
problems seem to multiply
now it’s just to late to wrap a smile around my face

(2x)
this is propaganda
you know, you know

I tried to make it go away
and I have tried the best I can
it’s been around for nights and days
they say it’s only in my head
now it’s just to late to wrap a smile around my face

(2x)
this is propaganda
you know, you know

now it’s just to late to wrap a smile around my face

(7x)
this is propaganda
you know, you know

this is propaganda

I know it's wrong but I can't stop it, because it feels good.

The title of the song is an obvious hint to the meaning of the text, that has in itself not many clues for an interpretation. But considering the tone of the voice of singer Lise Karlsnes, the tune and arrangement, and finally understanding Norwegian youth culture together with the original released video can give an relatively conclusive picture.

The song is about losing control over the impulse of loving, kissing another person at a concert, partying and drinking hard. The tone of the voice is full of tenderness and desire, seemingly a contradiction to the words that express a regret. The regret might come from the ratio or social convention. In the video there are young people using alcohol and kissing each other with passion and fire and do so even with three people, what is in most contexts outside the social norm. But they are only kissing and dancing, this is not about sex, rather than compassionate love. It is even somehow innocent, since it is just for the pure pleasure. There are no negative aspects shown, which supports the thesis that it is about contradicition between social norms and feelings. "It's all in my head" could support that, too, but it also can be interpreted as an wish to kiss someone even if it is not compliant with norms.

Though the repeating in the tune let it sound like a loop, that tends to go on endlessly. It is conclusive with the expression in the text (I tried to make it go away…) of a maniac loving who can't or doesn't want to control their thoughts/emotions. "now it’s just to late to wrap a smile around my face" is ambiguous and maybe means that the emotional state of the person is beyond the flirting phase or that their facing consequences of their acting outside the norm, which might be not so funny.

Finally, 'Propaganda' is a term for an biased information to manipulate or persuade someone, contradicting the whole text about the regrets and the attempts to stop an behavior that is outside social conventions. Together With the soft tone of the voice it is the desire to love somebody with passion, and losing control while doing so. The good feeling that the ecstatic kisses surely produce outweighs in the end the ratio of being not allowed to do so.
