We speak in the store
I'm a sensitive bore
You seem markedly more
And I'm oozing surprise

But it's late in the day
And you're well on your way
What was golden went gray
And I'm suddenly shy

And the gatherin' floozies
Afford to be choosy
And all sneezing darkly
In the dimming divide

And I have read the right books
To interpret your looks
You were knocking me down
With the palm of your eye

This was unlike the story
It was written to be
I was riding its back
When it used to ride me

And we were galloping manic
To the mouth of the source
We were swallowing panic
In the face of its force

And I am blue
I am blue and unwell
Made me bolt like a horse

Now it's done
Watch it go
You've changed some
water runs from the snow

Am I so dear?
Do I run rare?
And you've changed some
Peach, plum, pear...
Peach, plum...

I thnk I have a different interpretation than most and this may be because I feel this song is reflecting what I'm going through in my personal life.

we speak in the store i'm a sensitive bore you seem markedly more and i'm oozing surprise (she meets a guy and gets the courage to continue talking to him. she feels that she is already out of his league, but he becomes interested in her because she says things that he becomes surprised about, things that he didn't expect her to say)

but it's late in the day and you're well on your way what was golden went gray and i'm suddenly shy (their relationship may continue and she realizes that the conversations they share only a moment, and meaningless compared to the whole picture. each day they end without a climax and this makes her aware of the reality behind their situation.)

and the gatherin' floozies afford to be choosy and all sneezing darkly in the dimming divide (she knows that this person is thought of as attractive, and may have many who tell him so, girls that she can't relate to because she is different, and knows that those girls, are just the same as her behind the scenes)

i have read the right books to interpret your looks you were knocking me down with the palm of your eye (for this same reason, he isn't into her perhaps because of her looks, she is different from those who are normally attractive to him, and different from those he may be attracted to; he didn't have to say anything, she could tell from how he looked at her).

this was unlike the story it was written to be i was riding its back when it used to ride me (the situation was supposed to be much more, he was supposed to be her prince charming, and different from previous experiences before, she was no longer the horse, the submissive being, but instead took charge and initiated, perhaps becoming the princess.)

and we were galloping manic to the mouth of the source we were swallowing panic in the face of its force (although the relationship got off to a good start, perhaps continuing for more far longer than expected, both became scared and it dies; she becomes scared of the rejection, and he becomes concerned about their differences, and perhaps how she may feel)

and i am blue i am blue and unwell made me bolt like a horse (this makes her sick or heartbroken and she wants to run from it instead of pursuing; she returns to who she used to be and transforms back into the same role that she used to play)

now it's done watch it go you've changed some water run from the snow (she realizes its come to an end and realizes that the person she thought he was, wasn't him; it begins to desintigrate further until it has completely dissolved)

am i so dear? do i run rare? you've changed some peach, plum, pear (she questions the reasoning behind it, wondering if the things he may have felt about her were actually the truth. she may have been told in the past that she was rare for her qualities, often even sought out for them, and she thought he might be the same. but her perception of him changed and this was not the case. she thought they were in the same ground but they are as different as each of the fruit)

I think their relationship is more than just a fleeting moment and that the store is a metaphor that leads into the fruit.

again this is just my interpretation and i'm going through a very similar situation (almost to a t). this song makes me very sad in that respect because i understand what its like to be the horse.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
