Is the can half diseased
Or is the disease half canned
And is the man half machine
Or is the machine half man
I'm unretrofied
For you I'll just fake it
In the end just save it
For a new song and leave dead
In the end time is wasted
In the end wood paneled wagon
Carpool dragons
Killing me again
Now they're looting our holes
Until there is nothing left
Calloused intentions it seems,
Coward's invention at best
I'm unretrofied
For you Jesus can't play the music
Caused he's nailed to the cross
And over gnawed off feet I find
That I can't walk
I can't even walk
We're all dead
Or is the disease half canned
And is the man half machine
Or is the machine half man
I'm unretrofied
For you I'll just fake it
In the end just save it
For a new song and leave dead
In the end time is wasted
In the end wood paneled wagon
Carpool dragons
Killing me again
Now they're looting our holes
Until there is nothing left
Calloused intentions it seems,
Coward's invention at best
I'm unretrofied
For you Jesus can't play the music
Caused he's nailed to the cross
And over gnawed off feet I find
That I can't walk
I can't even walk
We're all dead

Dillinger's allowed to make up words
Well, retro does mean that something is old-fashioned so I'm guessing 'unretrofied' could mean being the opposite of that. Just a guess mind.
'Unretrofied' means to unconform or to not do what you're told.<br /> <br /> Urban Dictionary says: <br /> <br /> "To not be a follower; to be unique, or eccentric. You are completely yourself, and nobody has a say in who you are, and nobody bends you to be someone else. You belong to no clique.<br /> Girl 1: "You should go blonde." <br /> Girl 2: "Don't tell me to dye my hair! I'm unretrofied."<br /> <br /> To me this song means to find reason to not do what you're told.
I am pretty sure it is about conformity and is a very sarcastic song. This explains why this song sounds much more mainstream since the lyrics have to deal with conformity.
-and is the man half machine or is the machine half man - I think the machine part has more to do with us doing what we are told without question instead of being apathetic towards everything. Major record comanies basically tell their clients how to make songs and what they should sound like and this is just a sarcastic statement as if they were one of those bands.
I don't think it has anything to do with them going mainstream or a personal event, just that they are mocking bands that do chose to live their lives as slaves (machines) to record companies.
I also see this as a shot towards our society. As previously mentioned before, most people are slaves to fads and cliques (even the "rebels" are still conforming to their supposed non-conformity style) and as a result we act like machines since we can't think for ourselves. We are being told what is "cool" by men we don't see for their profit (calloused intentions it seems, coward's invention at best), and we are unable to think for ourselves (I can't walk).
I didn't hit every line but I think this pretty much summed up the song. I just got done ranting about how much American education produces slaves so that might have influenced my thinkiing but eh.
Amazing song...unretrofied deffinatly means "modernized". I love the bit about wood paneled wagon carpool dragons...
I think a lot of the interpretations given could be very accurate but my interpretation is the song is about all the bands/musicians that jump on the bandwagon to fit in with "what's in" at the time.
dillinger factoid: this song, phone home and a couple of other songs were actually going to be released under another band name because they sounded un-dillinger. but then greg ben and chris said fuck that we are dillinger and this is what we do...
Wow, just dloaded this song. I never really expected something like this from Dillinger, it's great...but I'm clueless on what unretrofied even means. =\
Goes out to buy Miss Machine
ehh...wtf? is this because they try to be more public or advance as musicians? somone please answer! great song by the way . (though its not ordinary dillinger)
i think its some nod to the modern situation of people liking retro things, as a fad. stores like urban outfitters can charge 70$ for pants that come pre-ripped, hes "unretrofied" as taking a stand to not be "modernized" to follow the trend of retro.
the can half diseased/disease half canned could be about TV, a can, with the disease, or fads, being spread by the media and the man half machine/machine half man could be about technology and how were trained to want that stuff.
the chorus sums everything up, people faking trends ands interests, time wasted repeating trends
or maybe im just looking too far into this
