Sunshine The Werewolf Lyrics
Cry your eyes bloodshot
while there's still time
'cause soon it's gone
and you'll be so shocked
one queen-sized coffin
that was built for two is your death bed
it belongs to you
tease me baby please me
with the fresh disease
hope riding on a bullet alive tonight you know we couldn't get it right
come save your life tonight you know we'll never get it right
don't try to swim to shore
because you can't go back
say three words
like they're the last you'll speak
curtains drop
concealing
appearances of heaven
destroyer
they'll be another just like you
you're not the only one I'm not the only one
destroyer
watching the fallout fly back up
walking where time stands still see how our love kills
love kills …. (love kills …. love kills)
dropping curtains down
concealing
appearances of heaven
without my existence
you are nothing
without my affection
you wilt… you wilt
we fucked like a nuclear war
release...
fuck off
see how I let you down
watching
fallout fly back up
while there's still time
'cause soon it's gone
and you'll be so shocked
that was built for two is your death bed
it belongs to you
with the fresh disease
hope riding on a bullet alive tonight you know we couldn't get it right
come save your life tonight you know we'll never get it right
because you can't go back
like they're the last you'll speak
curtains drop
concealing
appearances of heaven
they'll be another just like you
you're not the only one I'm not the only one
destroyer
watching the fallout fly back up
walking where time stands still see how our love kills
love kills …. (love kills …. love kills)
concealing
appearances of heaven
without my existence
you are nothing
without my affection
you wilt… you wilt
we fucked like a nuclear war
release...
fuck off
see how I let you down
watching

I hope this doesn't ruin it for anyone (it's possibly my favourite song and I was a bit shell-shocked when I read what it was actually about!) but here's something Greg Puciato said recently about the meaning of Sunshine The Werewolf:
http://www.gregpuciato.com/post/12969994606 "Greg, looking back on writing "Sunshine The Warewolf" did you imagine it would ever turn into your most passionate fans' favourite lyric to scream back "DESTROYERRRRRR!!!!" at you? What context/form has that lyric now taken on in your mind, if any?"
"When writing the song? No. I had no idea. Shortly after we mixed the album though, and were listening back to it, I think we all realized that the “Destroyer” part was a “moment” so to speak…it definitely felt like it had an air about it. When the song was written, the lyrics were originally actually inspired by an article that Brian Montuori, the artist responsible for the “Miss Machine” artwork, had sent me. It was a perverse and disgusting article about a strange and extreme subculture of people who would deliberately “give” and “receive” HIV in order to romantically share an eventually fatal disease(queen sized coffin built for two). The lyrics were fiction, and written from the perspective of the “giver”, who then turned out to have tricked the smitten “receiver” into thinking their love was forever before instead moving on to someone else(there’ll be another just like you…you’re not the only one, etc), sadistically leaving the receiver feeling tricked and scorned…the receiver eventually repeating the cycle as a giver. HIV vampires basically. A metaphor for people passing abuse forward in relationships. Obviously the “Destroyer” moment in a live setting has become so much more than that, and now, to me at least, exists outside of the song as a whole, as a standalone moment. The word has taken on a different energy, a symbol of a feeling of triumph over adversity, of overcoming obstacles, of exerting power and relentless individuality and drive to succeed even in the midst of seemingly overwhelming indifference and disapproval. It’s a sentiment that we as a band relate to, having overcome countless opposition and setbacks as we’ve clawed our way to get to where we are, and continue to do so. When that part exists as a “singalong” at our shows, it feels to me like a coming together of people who all can relate to that feeling. It’s a group expression or rallying cry of “fuck you” to all of the opposition that we can all relate to in life, as individuals trying to succeed, but as a collective expression of power and defiance in that moment. I can’t imagine it ever not being a highlight to me of every single set we play."
i feel like this song has a double-climax with the "DESTROYER" part and the "without my existence" part... in other words, fucking AWESOME
o yea to monicamarie, some other sick DEP songs IMO are 43% Burnt, The Mullet Burden, Panasonic Youth, Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants, and Fix Your Face. i'm pretty new to them myself so i'm still tryin to get into their older stuff
i wish i could see them with less than 50 people this song is the best on the album.
How BRUTAL is this song? I love the violin part in the background. Oh my god I need to go punch things now.
Dillinger has helped me through more than a few lady problems. And damnit how awesome is this vocalist now.
No kidding. Those violins in the right stereo sound loud as fuck.
the 'destroyer' part makes me want to DESTROY kids faces. this song fucking rules.
"Without my existence, you are nothing Without my affection, you wilt"
Dunno why I love those lines so much...
yes, when he yells "DESTROYER!!!!!" at that HUGE climax, i feel thats Dillinger's finest moment thus far. an immense song.
My take on it is that a girlfriend cheated on him, he was superpissed at her, and now he's saying that this is the only chance she ever had for happiness, and without him she is pointless. The violence is metaphorical, I think.
"don't try to swim to shore because you can't go back" Those lines are probably my favourite in the song. He's saying how she chose to swim out there in the first place, and he is the shore, and she's not coming back to him.
i saw these guys at a show with less than 50 people and it was the most fucking insane shit ever. their stage presence is amazing.
