Trimmed and Burning Lyrics

Took it all and take it over
Taking as much as you can see
I can almost think about it
But I cant arrange for you to see, yeah

Didnt know what I'm afraid of
I had to learn it from a dream
There's a light that never goes out
Burning a hole inside of me, yeah

Keep your lamps all trimmed and burning
Might be alarmed with what you see
I agreed to always love you but never enough to set you free

I think this song is about more than just romance, I think it's about the inner fire we have in each of us that can fuel us or destroy us, sometimes both. And that fire can only be enough for us---we can't help anyone else, they have to find their own source of strength.

"Keep your lamps trimmed and burning" is a biblical reference to Matthew 21:1-13. The passage is about being vigilant and aware, because you may not know when God will return. I think in the song it's a command to always be aware of yourself and your surroundings, because only you can love yourself, drive yourself, fix yourself, destroy yourself. It's also a warning, because "You may be alarmed by what you see."

im not sure what the whole song means, but the second verse is about him realizing that he didnt love his girlfriend as much as he thought he did. also i think this is reinforced by the last line, which i think is a play on the phrase is you really love someone youll set them free. but back to the second verse, i think his light that never goes out is his heart, and its burning cause hes with this girl that he doesnt love as much as he originally thought. all i can think of for the first verse is that maybe they were married and he is thinkin about what would happen if they divorced (i can think about it in my head) but he doesnt want the girl to know he feels like this (but cant arrange for you to see). and then the last verse i think hes telling the girl if shed just open her eyes and look around shed realize he feels like this, which would probably upset her. then on the last line again, he agreed to always lover her (their marriage) but he decides even though hes not as happy as he could be, hes going to try and stick it out. i dunno, thats prolly a load of crap, but thats just what i could come up with at 1 in the morning.
