It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves
The trouble is that you're in love with someone else
It should be me
Oh, it should be me
Sacred parts, your get aways
You come along on summer days
Tenderly, tastefully
And so may we make time
Try to find somebody else
This place is mine
Set the day, you know exactly how I feel
I had my doubts little girl
I'm in love with something real
It could be me, that's changing
And so may we make time
To try and find somebody else
We pass a line
Now season with health
Two lovers walk on lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See the stands long ending path
Oh, how I love you
And in the evening, when we are sleeping
We are sleeping
Oh, we are sleeping
And so may we make time
We try to find somebody else
Who has a line
Now season with health
Two lovers walk on lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See the stands long ending path
The trouble is that you're in love with someone else
It should be me
Oh, it should be me
Sacred parts, your get aways
You come along on summer days
Tenderly, tastefully
Try to find somebody else
This place is mine
I had my doubts little girl
I'm in love with something real
It could be me, that's changing
To try and find somebody else
We pass a line
Two lovers walk on lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See the stands long ending path
And in the evening, when we are sleeping
We are sleeping
Oh, we are sleeping
We try to find somebody else
Who has a line
Two lovers walk on lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See the stands long ending path

I think the song is talking about how people fall ass-backward into marriage. People sometimes get married simply because they have spent "x" amount of years together and not necessarily for love. "Set a date, you know exactly how I feel" is more like a dare than a profession of love. Both try to look for ways out, because they are too young "to be locked" into a marriage. When he says his girl is "in love with someone else", I think he's talking about the girl being in love with her version of him, how she wants him to be, and not how he really is. And not his true nature. At least the way he knows himself to be, the side he hasn't shown her. But, after enough time with her, he's changed, and he's softened on the idea of going through with it "I had my doubts little girl", "I'm in love with something real", he didn't need a piece of paper (marriage licensee) to be together, but "It could be me, that's changing" she wore him down and he's conceded to her desire of making it official and getting married. So, in the past he, well really they both make excuses, or look for reasons why they shouldn't, "take time, look for somebody else." But, they "pass a line" they come to a point in the relationship where it's either marry or break up, they get hitched because it's easier than breaking up. And maybe they will eventually fall in love, realistically they go old together, if they live long enough to be one of the old couples walking around together in a park, "seasoned with health."
Anyway, that's the way I picture it.
@Imsoglad I've loved this song sings Antics came out but have never had anyone put it's meaning down so succintly. You, my friend, rock.

"It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves The trouble is that you're in love with someone else It should be me. Oh, it should be me."
...as a friend put it, "damn straight."
The intro in this song is the exact guitar from This Mortal Coil's "Not Me" (which is a dual cover of a Colin Newman song by the way). Don't take me wrong, because I am not complaining or calling Interpol rip offs. In fact it's the opposite, I LOVE that they have the same riff (intentionally or unintentionally I don't know, but I tend to think intentionally given their sound and influences).
Anyway, I figured I would point this out. Great song!
Lyrically one of my favourite songs for it's honesty and clarity. It reminds me of the way in my mind I rehearse what i will say to the those I love, but when we come face to face any articulted expression is overpowered by emotion, leading to me blurting out my stream of conciousness i.e "it should be me!!!"
"Oh, how I love you In the evenings, when we are sleeping We are sleeping. Oh, we are sleeping "
If you have ever loved someone so much that you enjoy watching them just 'live' then you may relate to this in the same way as I do. For me this segment describes how tragic it is that the girl being sung to doe's not feel the same way. The singer has to repeat over and over that he loves her even when they are sleeping, whether he means in a literal sense (watching her sleep) or that he dreams of her. This make's it bleaker that she actually loves another, as we know that he truly loves, not lusts, for her perhaps more than she may know. Either way I think anyone who has found tragedy in love will find beauty in this song.
Peace, love, drama and skateboarding :-)
"It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves"
They're too close to be hurt, in other words they got too involved with each other, now that they have to break up, it sucks. Or this could mean it's too late to fix things since they're focused on themselves now.
"The trouble is that you're in love with someone else It should be me. Oh, it should be me"
Self-explanitory. The problem is she likes someone, it should be him, but isn't.
"Your sacred parts, your get aways You come along on summer days Tenderly, tastefully"
She's going out with other guys, but still spends time with him, never getting too close.
"And so may we make time Try to find somebody else This place is mine"
They need to both go find someone else. This place is mine could be talking about living arrangements, or his friends (she is trying to invade his social circle maybe), or just his feeling in general towards who's given in the relationship.
"You said today, you know exactly how I feel I had my doubts little girl I'm in love with something real"
He told her he'll be sad when she's gone, and she says she feels the same. He knows it's not true, though, because he actually loves her, and her feelings for him are superficial.
"It could be me that's changing"
It's me, not you.
"And so may we make time To try and find somebody else Who has a line"
A line could refer to someone who has something to say, or a place in their lives, or it could be a coke reference.
"Now season with health Two lovers walk a lakeside mile Try pleasing with stealth, growing old See what stands long or ending fast"
It's pointless to stay in the relationship. her love isn't real.
Oh, how I love you In the evenings, when we are sleeping We are sleeping. Oh, we are sleeping
And so may we make time We try to find somebody else Who has a line
Now season with health Two lovers walk a lakeside mile Try pleasing with stealth, growing old See what stands long or ending fast
I don't think anyone would disagree that it's about unrequited love, very unrequited love, literally over months, years. It's about his fantasies, his imagining them together, them sleeping next to each other, his doubts at times that she's not all that he's built her up to be in his mind. But it's not a sad song, I don't think, I think it's happhy because it's about his infatuation for her and the joy and distraction it gives him. If any of that makes any sense.
No, this song is about a love that cannot be, but they both know that regardless of that they love each other and they both are "locked inside [theirselves]" but have to be with other people because they cant be together!
oh how i love that "Oh, how I love you"-line!
Either way I think anyone who has found tragedy in love will find beauty in this song.
O.o...........words cannot express how awesome that line is...and so damn true too
And yeah...i do find beauty in this song as i tend to have a huge crush on a girl who already has someone...
i think this guy is having an affair with this girl, he loves her, she doesnt feel the same way.
