Dont you think its somewhat a jesus-y song? "send us up a baby boy, let the smoke carry his name", makes me think of the birth of jesus. could it be a reference? And in this context, i think the next sentence is charming - "If its a girl let her shine".

I think the song is pretty self-explanatory. "the hour of the man is nigh" - man is really nothing, lives for a minute - and in infinity's hourglass, even less. love this song.

Always saw this song as a statement on corporal punishment. But the thought that Aerial had about it being "jesus-y" is interesting. Especially since Jesus is probably the most famous occurance of corporal punishment in history.

It could be the death by electric chair,though I'm not sure the significance of "Send us up a baby boy, Let the smoke carry his name"... Maybe it means soul with a clean slate, that the smoke from being electrocuded cleanse his sins?

i think this song's about how man's downfall will be HIMSELF... the song talks about being ETERNAL, IMMORTAL, but his "tongues untied" (knowledge/communication/beliefs) condemn fellow men to die... also it seems to deal some with spirtuality, "let the smoke carry his name" to the baby boy being a sacrafice? but "if it's a girl, let her shine".. i think the song's a lot about pride, pride of being human and being greedy, selfish, stacking up our supplies. wonderful song.

It's about patriarchy in society. Men are driven to be emotionally sterile and essentially 'condemned by men' to die, as it is usually the men who ensure other men don't act warm.

Fear is referenced as a basis of patriarchy(thunder, hide your ears)

Forts, silver brides, golden houses... all references to the almost impossible task given most men to be a king among men, with no call to accept failure or growth.

Emotionally, women are given liberty. "If its a girl, let her shine" References to eternal and immortality are both an attack on the pride of masculinity but also the power it has over all of us and the likelihood it will continue.
