Chia-Like, I Shall Grow Lyrics
i've watched you all succeed
with the highest marks in greed
from my cave
where you're displayed
like photographs that bleed
and my teeth grind names
into their ivory membranes
i am hate everlasting
with this sickly spell i'm casting
discard all feelings
the stars scar my ceiling
sun, i won't spare you
moon, i won't spare you
and my pain is mine
it’s become my friend with time
chia like it grows
watch it fester for my foes
one day i'm gonna get up
get right back into the city
with my flamethrower mouth
you bet your life it won't be pretty
i discard all my feelings
as the stars still scar my ceiling
i won’t spare you
photograph
why’d you have to go
and take a picture of a life like that
you aren’t new enough
i give up on you
look at you
pretty boy, floating face
down in a pond of glue
you aren’t new enough
we give up on all those like you
discard all feelings
the stars scar my ceiling
i won't spare you
i shall grow and grow
with the highest marks in greed
from my cave
where you're displayed
like photographs that bleed
and my teeth grind names
into their ivory membranes
i am hate everlasting
with this sickly spell i'm casting
the stars scar my ceiling
sun, i won't spare you
moon, i won't spare you
it’s become my friend with time
chia like it grows
watch it fester for my foes
one day i'm gonna get up
get right back into the city
with my flamethrower mouth
you bet your life it won't be pretty
as the stars still scar my ceiling
i won’t spare you
why’d you have to go
and take a picture of a life like that
you aren’t new enough
i give up on you
look at you
pretty boy, floating face
down in a pond of glue
you aren’t new enough
we give up on all those like you
the stars scar my ceiling
i won't spare you
i shall grow and grow

it's not about bands or music, he just has such limitless pain and hurt, if metaphors were real, he could kill the masses by unleashing it.
Or, according to Max, it's about "feeling like an alien and being angry about it."
From Max's Reddit AMA:
"chia is about emotional isolation and how that can produce apathy towards other people who "have a life". "

i've watched you all succeed with the highest marks in greed from my cave where you're displayed like photographs that bleed
He watches everyone succeed out of motivation based on greed, while he sits in his cave alone, looking at photographs of all those who are more successful than him. He feels so much contempt for their success and happiness while he has none, that these images that taunt him of everyone else's perfect yet shallow life seem to bleed. Life is unfair and these pictures are destroying him.
and my teeth grind names into their ivory membranes i am hate everlasting with this sickly spell i'm casting
He has such contempt for their success and his misery that his suffering has turned to hate for others who have what he can't, and he wishes the misfortune he has experienced on everyone else.
discard all feelings the stars scar my ceiling sun, i won't spare you moon, i won't spare you
He discards his feelings, for all he feels is pain, which leaves one with no other option but to feel numb. The stars, or symbols of memories from a pleasant past, scar his ceiling, or heart/soul. He sees the stars that remind him of a better time, but they still remain, taunting him, scarring him because he can have that no more. His pain is so unbearable that he wants to destroy all things good because all they do is taunt him and scar him. Therefore he wishes to destroy these things, and he will not even spare the sun or the moon.
and my pain is mine it's become my friend with time chia-like, it grows watch it fester for my foes
His pain is the only constant in his life, and so it becomes like his only friend. All it does is grow, and causes his contempt for everything to grow and grow as well.
one day i'm gonna get up get right back into the city with my flamethrower mouth you bet your life it won't be pretty
One day he will leave his cave where he has been hiding with all his pain and anger that has built up, he will go back into the city and destroy everything that has caused him this pain. His mouth will explode with the rage that has grown for them all, as he will destroy them in a fit of rage.
photograph, photograph, photograph... why'd you have to go and take a picture of a life like that? you aren't new enough i give up, i give up, i give up on you
He looks at an old photograph where things were good in life, and wonders why he has to be taunted by more reminders of a better life that he can no longer have. He muses that the photograph is not new enough, for if it were recent, he would have a better life in the present or close to it. He gives up on focusing on the pleasant past that he wants to attain again, for all it does is taunt him.
look at you, look at you, look at you... pretty boy, floating face down in a pond of glue you aren't new enough we give up, we give up, we give on all those like you
Perhaps he sees himself in the past as someone who is happier and yet has less depth, just a pretty boy, who is drifting along in life ignorant of anything else, and is content being suspended/stuck in his own little world ("floating face down in a pond of glue"). Again, he muses that this is not new enough because he wants to feel this way again but gives up on trying.
haha chia pets creating songs
left out the sun and moon bits
"sun, i wont spare you moon, i wont spare you"
i always thought this song was about his relationship with his dad and his childhood. the bit about "the stars scar my ceiling" really sticks out, the way kids like those glow-in-the-dark stars you stick on your ceiling. and how hard they are to get off. that part that doesn't make sense is where he says "sun", i thought it was "son" ha, i dont know.
First of all, the first part is wrong... this is how it should be:
And my teeth grind names Into their ivory membranes
I must say that this is my favorite Say Anything song... especially the third time he goes into the chorus.
Possibly my favourite SA song, speaking about how he will destroy all these "scene" and predictable, greedy, repititive, unoriginal bands with his songs. He will spare no one. Even bands who some people consider to be as idolic as the Sun and the Moon. After all his songs are completely original and ridicoulously lyrically amazing.
i'd never thought i'd like a song so much that made use of a reference to chia-pets....only Say Anything could do this and kick so much ass.
