Benefits of Lying (With Your Friend) Lyrics

everything i say falls away
like the fade on the radio song
and everything i try pass me by
like the tide seems to rise then it's gone

still there's something to be said
for company in bed this time of morning
see i knew we'd agree
how can anyone deny
the benefits of lying with your friends
we'll try it again

sometimes when i'm by myself
i can't find myself
and theres no one there
sometimes i can see myself
i can be myself with a friend

now everyday i write, both my eyes
and my mind fills with complications
and everywhere i go pass by slow
fading moments and aspirations

still there's something to be said
for company in bed this time of morning
see i knew we'd agree
how can anyone deny
the benefits of lying with your friend
we'll try it again

sometimes when i'm by myself
i can't find myself
and there's no one there
sometimes i can be myself
i can see myself with a friend now
(a friend now)

i'll never know you like you know yourself
you'll never know me like i know myself
i'll never know you like you know yourself
you'll never know me like i know myself
i'll never know you like you know yourself
you'll never know me like i know myself

(fade out)

The start of that second verse is a little tricky, but I believe it actually goes:

'Everyday I rise both my eyes Then my mind fills with complications.'

I think it's supposed to evoke waking up and feeling bad, or at least anxious. Like first your eyes take in your surroundings (complications) then your conscious mind remembers whatever it is that's been troubling you (more complications). So both 'my eyes' and then 'my mind' are being filled with complications, one after the other in quick succession, I think is the idea.

Beautiful song. The lyrics almost work as poetry all by themselves, which is really rare for pop music.

In fact I think the lyric actually may be 'fill' which makes even more sense. It's double tracked and there's some heavy slurring on that word that makes it hard to tell.

in a sense, this is a sad song "sometimes when i'm by myself / i can't find myself / and theres no one there" but then he introduces a temporary fix - friends with benefits! he feels better when hes not left alone to deal with himself. "sometimes i can see myself / i can be myself with a friend " not my favorite song but its good nonetheless..

Am I the only one sensing innuendo here?

i sense the innuendo as well, but i like to think he's lonely and just wanted someone to sleep next to him. but it is more than likely about friends with benefits.
