love this song. does anyone else think that when she sings the lines "but all i have is your letter read..." she sounds like fiona apple in her "criminal" song? or is it just me?
I think this song is pretty much about not moving on, being stuck on someone although they've left.
For me, this song is about being left by someone you can't help but love, and despite the fact they've left you, you can't get over it.
This song is very personal to me, i play it constantly hen i'm having those 'i miss you' days.
i love the progression of this song. the song starts off angry and resentful to resigned and peaceful at the end.
It's a beautiful song about the progress of emotions that one goes through upon finding out that the person you love doesn't love you back. First you are resentful of this person ("you're not good enough for me"), then you are disheartened by this realization ("And I'm afraid, and I can't breathe, and i'm in love with you but you are not with me"). And now you have to find a way to pick yourself back up after putting so much hope into this person ("i have put so much into a life i made too much about you to lie").
The lyrics alone can't completely express the meaning of this song. Rachael's emotions are presented in the way she sings this song and the way the melody progresses from dark and angry at the beginning to calm and peaceful at the end.
I take "letter read" a play on sounds of the words to really mean "letter red" as in the scarlet letter...to say that her lover cheated on her and she's sill thinking about why and wants an explanation

The first thing you want to do when you break up with someone or find someone else doesn't like you as much as you liked them is to deny your past feelings for them. However, this relationship and this person affected her so much that she can't even attempt to do this. It shows such honest vulnerability - it's beautiful.
