Lead Me Into the Night Lyrics

i went too far, yes i came too close
i drove away the one that i loved the most
now i ride the tide on a boat made of sand
i'm sailing for another to guide me to land

and lead me into the night
please drive away the light
cause i've been blinded by glitter and gold
my eyes need to rest from this light
and sleep well at night

i travelled east and i travelled west
and i found a boy with a heart on his chest
i ran aground, my ship left to rust
yes, i found a guide in the city of lust

to lead me into the night
oh please drive away the light
although my mother will never understand
i walk with him away from the light
and into the night

oh you, you, you, it's gotta be you
you, oh you, it's gotta be you
true, true, it's true, it's gotta be you
you, oh you, it's gotta be you

to lead me into the night...

well, i went too far and i came too close
i drove away the first one and now he's a ghost
then i went adrift on a boat made of sand
it was leaking like a sieve but i made it to land

he leads me into the night
he drives away the light
he makes the darkness seem bright
and walks with me into the night
away from the light

My interpretation is that here is someone who thought they were in love, and it was just that, an "in love" feeling and not something lasting. Love is not all light. It's a mix. It's standing your ground when the waves crash over you. It's actually being able to do that rather than just float on a "boat made of sand," a metaphor for "a wing and a prayer."

In short, boat/water equals the uncertainty. The land references the surety and stability.

My favorite part is "although my mother will never understand, I walk with him away from the ight and into the night." It has a few possible meanings, but I think it refers to a rite of passage in which some of the more traditional things are ignored in favor of striking out and finding a sense of self.

In some ways the night represents the unknown. The land represents safety. The safe unknown. The struggles to find oneself.

Not to downplay your interpretation, but I thought it was about a one night stand.

"I found a guide in the city of lust, to lead me into the night" ... can't break that down any further.

And the line "although my mother will never understand, I walk with him away from the light and into the night" just makes me think her mother doesn't understand her loose lifestyle.

It's like she had a choice of an easy life (filled with glitter and gold) but decided for a more difficult one, with someone who made her feel complete. She realized that beyond all the glitter there was nothing else. "Mother will never understand": the parents want their children to marry with someone wealthy, but the daughter is looking for something else.

For me this is about finding someone who'll stick through the night (and not someone who'll be long gone before daylight...). It's easy to find some company for the light, happy moments. Now having someone to lead you through the night is quite exquisite. She probably had someone like that, to just be there when she needed the most (i.e. the lonely nights), but fucked up somehow, looking for glitter and gold. Now she sails on boats made of sand...
