It is the deception of time. They feel numb to eachother now and take eachother for granted. Although she says she doesnt care anymore, she does. The could we shows she doesnt want to give up even though maybe they should.
As the relationship matured, the feeling of being "in love" faded. One of them gave up hope and doesn't want to work at developing a "real love." The other wants to move forward and put forth the effort to make this a positive thing.
Both partners need to work at this in order for it to work.

I love the atmosphere in this song. I think it's the best song on the "Long gone before daylight" album.

One thing I've noticed about Cardigans is that the mood of the songwriter has been changing during the period from "Emmerdale" where everything seems so light and happy, ...but "Long Gone Before Daylight" has some of the saddest songs I've ever heard. The best example is this song...
I think it's about flashback... It seems like she touched the bottom and she is full of regrets... I think it's all about regretting... Now he is over and done with her, but she still loves him. And after all that she's been trough she is desperate and nothing has sense anymore.

I've been wondering about this one. It's extremely sad and obviously the protagonist still deeply loves the other, but it seems that the other doesn't have the energy to keep going with the relationship. The lyric "you really shouldn't carry me no more i'm much too heavy for you i'm really quite a mess" , maybe implies that the relationship is unbalanced and that she has some heavy problems mentally, and leans a lot on the other.
