I really like it when he says that the world can't be saved in our times. Man, we think we are free and stuff but we are slaves of the market and that is all it seems to matter. A shame if you ask me.

Very nostalgic.. you sometimes get the impression the past is looked at with rose tinted spectacles? Or maybe I was born too late for that kind of childhood.
That's a possibilty. He's definetly looking at the past longingly (like the rest of the album) without making mention of any of the bad times. But then, who wants to dwell on the bad times? Anyway, I think the last line sums everything up really well.
The last line sums up the meaning of the song. This is yet another great tune on surely one of The Kinks' best albums. Rays' writing is impeccable and it totally fits what the whole album is trying to say - new stuff is great, but it wasn't so bad before.
Just love the heroic images he starts with about playing cricket and smoking cigarettes. What a youth god. And then later he's this blobby bore, fully submitted to suburban monotony...Maybe that's all we really want after all.
