Some of the ugliest things
Took the longest time to make
And some of the easiest habits
Are the hardest ones to break
And I'm not asking for value
Nor the pain
But I am asking
For a way out of this lie
Because I can't wait for you
To catch up with me
And I can't live in the past
And drown myself in memories
Welcome to nowhere
And finding out where it is
And fixing your problems
And starting over again
Your feeding your ego
With what you can see outside
And you're killing yourself
For not speaking your mind
In memory...
I wonder why you make believe
You live your life straight through me
I cannot understand
Why you question me and then you lie
I will not justify your ways
I cannot show you an escape
I do not know you any more
I never knew you anyway
Took the longest time to make
And some of the easiest habits
Are the hardest ones to break
Nor the pain
But I am asking
For a way out of this lie
To catch up with me
And I can't live in the past
And drown myself in memories
And finding out where it is
And fixing your problems
And starting over again
With what you can see outside
And you're killing yourself
For not speaking your mind
You live your life straight through me
I cannot understand
Why you question me and then you lie
I cannot show you an escape
I do not know you any more
I never knew you anyway

uuh no. wrong song buddy..
After the first listen, this song seems to be about a relationship ending. Personally i could have used the last part for one of my own. Its kinda like something went wrong, something the other person did, and now they are back, and realize their error, and want everything peachy again. But the songwriter is saying no, and is being smart, he knows what happened, he knows its not forgiveable, and he knows that being peachy with the person will solve nothing, and only bring him more anguish.
Looking at some more of the lyrics, mainly the second verse, it seems the songwriter has started over. He saw what happened, realized mistakes he had made, and is smarter and better off. His ego is fed by his healing and that the person wants back, and he knows he controls the cards, but yet he isnt totally done yet, he still has stuff on his chest, stuff that needs to be said, but that he cant, hes afraid of hurting the person, which pisses him off even more, hence killing himself for not speaking his mind.
I agree with outlaw but it doesn't just apply to a relationship it can also apply to a death of a loved one or any situation where one may forget to focus on the present and instead just focus on the past and want things to be the same
It's about taking action instead of choosing to wallow in sadness and obsess over the past
i love this song!
How does this song only have 3 comments!? (I find myself saying this more and more as I delve deeper and deeper into SongMeanings.net...)
This is such a powerful song, Brent puts such emotion behind this song, it's amazing. You can always feel the emotion when he's singing.
Absolutely incredible, give this song a shot!!!
this is my favorite song by shinedown. i think it is about when who you thought were your friends get jealous of your success and want to ruin it all.
You nailed it, Outlaw. Though I do have a few other ideas that are different.
I think this is about an ending relationship.
"Some of the ugliest things Took the longest time to make And some of the easiest habits Are the hardest ones to break..."
I think line is basically talking about the whole relationship in general. It took a long time to get as far as they did, but it turned out ugly in the end.
"And I'm not asking for value Nor the pain But I am asking For a way out of this lie..."
He doesn't want the pain, he just wants out. Though I think it means that the relationship has become a lie, I think it also means that she's been lying to him in some way.
"Your feeding your ego With what you can see outside And you're killing yourself For not speaking your mind..."
She felt something was wrong with the relationship, and he sensed that, but she lied and wouldn't speak her mind, and she's killing herself and him.
"I will not justify your ways I cannot show you an escape I do not know you any more I never knew you anyway..."
Self explanatory. She stabbed him in the back, and it's now as though he never knew her.
This is basically an exact, on the friggin' nose description of what happened to me just a week ago. Actually, a week ago tomorrow. She stabbed me in the back, but it's now as though I never knew the girl.
agreed. does outlaw sounds like you nailed it. i just "re-discovered" this song and am in love with it...maybe cause it sounds so familiar to me right now....
great song ..very emotional .. though when i first listened to it ..didnt like it that much, but when i payed more attention to the lyrics it turned out to be so impressive.. I totally agree with (Harusame) about it's meaning ..
