la petite mort Lyrics
estelle i was your husband
third in a group of three
you twice the widowed
and i once did see
a wedding bed like no other
for it's turned to a funeral grave
truth is temperance, happiness warns
signposts on the road that is paved
chorus:
when the decent folks dance a two step revival
denial and deviation, temptation and trial
estelle oh estelle what you loved you gave away
jesus says we die a little death for him everyday
dot turned tricks with the spoons
played piano with the other hand
you the kid who liked life so much
look up,it's your wedding band
the minister spoke, the vows we took
at that moment you were mine
a falling took place afterward
an explanantion would take more time
when the decent folks dance a two step revival
denial and deviation, temptation and trial
estelle oh estelle what you loved you gave away
jesus says we die a little death for him everyday
estelle i took you home that night
my wife above the commonlaw
laid it up like we always do
in the hammock of our backyard
swinging like a rocking horse
cannonballing down a track
we both found heaven right then
you just chose not to come back
when the decent folks dance a two step revival
denial and deviation, temptation and trial
estelle oh estelle what you loved you gave away
jesus says we die a little death for him everyday
third in a group of three
you twice the widowed
and i once did see

I can't believe no one has commented yet. This is a lovely song about the conclusion of Estelle's life.
Hehe, actually in Erin's own words "this is a song about an orgasm", or "the little death". (Live @ The Independent, SF. 05/06/07)
Yeah, I've seen her live too and that's what she said, but I always took it as a double entendre. I mean, "death" is a Shakespearean euphemism for orgasm, but lines like "We both found heaven right then / You just chose not to come back" sound literally. So I thought it meant she died during sex. Like she had such an intense orgasm that it killed her. I don't know. I could be wrong.
When she opened for Ani DiFranco in 2008, she told our audience that this song is about lesbian sex.
