Nikki Oh Nikki Lyrics

you know that guy
who stole your girlfriend
away from you
in the summer of '95
he's going to die...

you know her name
sits in your brain
like a tumor
her eyes still shine
in your memory
she's going to die...

well you can carry that grudge
or you can let it go
but as sure as i'm singing this song, you know
she's going to die, she's going to die

five'll get you ten so just let it go
that she and he and i will hear the final chord
just let it go, let it go
we're going to die...

I posit that this is the best breakup song ever. You may not agree, but only until you hear the bridge.

I agree. I've talked with John at length about this song, and the most tragic part is that it's all true. It's from the perspective of a guy obsessed with his sister who eventually killed himself over it.

Nikki Oh Nikki was originally written by John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. The original is much longer.

Essentially this song is saying "you know that one guy you hate for whatever reason, well someday he'll die. Happy now? And that girl you dont like for whatever reason? Yeah, she'll die eventually too. So now you can let it go. And oh yeah, you're going to die too."

The lyrics up above are wrong. One tiny word makes a HUGE, HUGE difference. This is in NO way a breakuup song. I thought it was upon initial listen, but it's about letting go of grudges, and about seeing life's bigger picture.

"That guy who stole your girlfriend in the summer of '95 -- he's going to die".

Oh, ha ha! I get it -- it's a quirky revenge song. You're going to kill that guy who took my lady? Awesome. And the girl's going to get killed, too?

"She's going to die".

YEAH! Great! Kill them both! That'll teach 'em!!!

"well you can carry that grudge or you can let it go but as sure as i'm singing this song, you know WE'RE going to die, WE'RE going to die"

Doesn't matter if you hold on to that resentment or move on. We're ALL dying.
