I could be loud man, I could be silent
I could be young man or I could be old
I could be a gentleman, I could be violent
I could turn hot man or I could be cold
I could be just like the calm before the storm boy,
Waiting for all hell yeah to break loose
I could be innocent or I could be guilty
Doesn't mean that I don't believe in no noose
So I'm singin'

I could be rich like a wandering Gypsy
I could be poor like a fat wallet lost
I could be first man or I could come last
It's not who breaks the ribbon boy it's how you get across
I could be red blue black and white sunset
Or darkest at day boy or brightest at night
I could be the sun boy I could be the moon
I'm made up from the stars boy I'm shining so bright

So I'm singin'

I could be asleep boy or I could be awake
I could be alive and I be the walking dead
I could be ignorant or I could be informed
I could lead my life man or I could be led
I could be anything I put my mind to boy
All I gotta do is give myself half a chance
I can bring love back into my life
And share it with the world if I got some balance

So I'm singin'

I think it has a lot to do with equality/balance. As John sings about all the different things he could be, representing the different types of people that populate this world, and accepting each of these people for who they are.

ummm i m pretty sure the right lyrics are

"0I could be innocent or I could be guilty Doesn't mean that I won't believe in the noose"

It makes more sence, plus thats what it says in the back of the book lol

I agree with Meaner. I think the song is all about embracing diversity and appreciating others. Then again part of me thinks the song could just be about believing in yourself and that you can do anything you put your mind to!! BAH DA BAH DA DA!

    Awesome song!

Well, if it's about diversity, then that would explain the song title. Zebras are black and white of course...diversity. So I think that Meaner is right

Its about equality and balance. Think of a Zebra. The black and the white appears to be balanced, yep folks just like Yin and Yang. The good and the bad. You can tell that he's highlighting the positive and negative sides of it all. I don't think i need to use an example, it's pretty obvious. TA DAH! Its about balance. It's pretty clear, it even says "and share it with the world if i got some balance ". Some people just try to be too god damn analytical for their own good.
