this is one of my favorite bruce springsteen songs. It's simple but I think that makes it very beautiful and recognizable.
At the time of this album's release he had been very briefly married to a woman from Oregonite Julliene Phillips when he had an affair with a band member. As a man with an insightful moral voice who was approaching the time in life when locked internal doors begin to open and the dark hidden self demands to be dealt with.
These are ideas that are best understood by metaphor, and Bruce is a master of it. Hit about 35 or 40 and find a copy of "Little Book on the Human Shadow" by Robert Bly and be forever changed!
Bruce has dealt with depression issues and this song is a description of the way in which depression can sneak up on him and change his outlook on life's offerings, in this case a relationship. It seems closely descriptive of the effects of bi-polar or manic-depressive episodes. I love that he closes the song with defiance; that the evil of the disorder will not win out.
