Take 'Em As They Come Lyrics
Last night I dreamed we was running through the outlands
Tears streaming, your pretty face all a wreck
(I held your daddy's gun in my tremblin' hands
And down the highway another stranger comes
You gotta take 'em baby when they come.
Little girl put on your best dress
'Cause we're goin' out on the town tonight
(Better bring along your switchblades)
'Cause for sure some fool's gonna wanna fight
You've got to take 'em baby as they come
CHORUS
You gotta take 'em, take 'em as they come, girl
Take 'em as they come, girl
Take 'em as they come, girl
Take 'em baby as they come
God save the rider in the black night
Save the man who taught that it was right
To do what they have done
To become what we have become
You gotta take 'em when they come
Little girl, gone are the days
Faded away into a clear blue night
And all the vows that we made
Lie shattered and broken in the morning light;
You gotta take 'em when they come
CHORUS
I know your heart is breaking
I can feel it too
Though my finger on the trigger's shakin'
Here I swear to you
If I could take all your sorrow so that you'd never cry, girl, or be blue
(Come tommorow)
That's what I'd do for you, pretty one
I swear I'll take 'em baby when they come
CHORUS
Tears streaming, your pretty face all a wreck
(I held your daddy's gun in my tremblin' hands
And down the highway another stranger comes
You gotta take 'em baby when they come.
'Cause we're goin' out on the town tonight
(Better bring along your switchblades)
'Cause for sure some fool's gonna wanna fight
You've got to take 'em baby as they come
Take 'em as they come, girl
Take 'em as they come, girl
Take 'em baby as they come
Save the man who taught that it was right
To do what they have done
To become what we have become
You gotta take 'em when they come
Little girl, gone are the days
Faded away into a clear blue night

This was the one that really caught my attention off Tracks, the great music plus the story that really draws you in. I can listen to this over and over again, just wondering who the Rider in the black night is, and what happened to the narrator and his girlfriend that they're running down a pitch black road. Someone has done something horrible to either the narrator and his girl, or just to his girlfriend. She's in terrible distress, and he's trying to comfort her.
I feel that the meaning here is simply that he's going to do everything he can to protect her. As it says, If i could take all your sorrow---that's what i'd do for you (I think it's act. little one). You can't run away from what's troubling you, you have to take them as they come, just deal with them. The narrator is willing to do anything to protect and heal this person that I think he loves. The last line is one of the greatest lines not that i've heard just from Bruce, but anywhwere for what it means: I swear I'll take em baby when they come
@guns135 I think “the rider in the black night” is just about the traveler, so he can get to his destination safely, as well as a metaphor for traveling though life, how we stumble about “blindly” through life, wondering about our purpose, God, etc. To “save him” is just a prayer, for we are ALL that rider.

I can't believe this song didn't make it on The River over some of the ones that did. This is prime 80's Bruce.
The singer realizes, and wants his woman to understand, that he can make promises until the cows come home, but they're really just words (all the vows that we made lie shattered and broken in the morning light". He plans to show her his love through action, and by always being there.
