My Beautiful Reward Lyrics
Well I sought gold and diamond rings
My own drug to ease the pain that living brings
Walked from the mountain to the valley floor
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
From a house on a hill a sacred light shines
I walk through these rooms but none of them are mine
Down empty hallways I went from door to door
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
Well your hair shone in the sun
I was so high I was the lucky one
Then I came crashing down like a drunk on a barroom floor
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
Tonight I can feel the cold wind at my back
I'm flyin' high over gray fields my feathers long and black
Down along the river's silent edge I soar
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
My own drug to ease the pain that living brings
Walked from the mountain to the valley floor
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
I walk through these rooms but none of them are mine
Down empty hallways I went from door to door
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
I was so high I was the lucky one
Then I came crashing down like a drunk on a barroom floor
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward
I'm flyin' high over gray fields my feathers long and black
Down along the river's silent edge I soar
Searching for my beautiful reward
Searching for my beautiful reward

This song is about the journey of life....trying to find that thing, that place, that person that will make you entirely happy....hopefully one day.....
My Beautiful Reward is another way of saying eternal reward or Heaven. We go through life looking for satisfaction from material things, but it never works. ("my own drug to ease the pain that living brings") Jesus said to store up your riches in heaven and here on earth.
"Up on a hill, a sacred light shines" This is the house of God the Father--God has been referred to as The Light. Jesus said in John's Gospel--"in My Father's house are many rooms--I go there to prepare a place for you." The song says "I went down hallways from room to room, but none of then are mine." Perhaps the person does not fell like they're good enough for heaven and there is no room for them?
After this, the next two verses stump me and don't fit in with my theory on the first--so I could be completely wrong :c-)
cubfever i think is on the right track. The man knows, through experience in verse 1, that fulfillment can't be found in material things. He seems to have come up empty with religion in verse 2. In verse 3 he finds that romantic love is not the ultimate fulfillment either. Verse 4 simply shows a guy who hasn't given up on the search. Possibly riding a motorcycle. "Long Time Coming" could be the sequel to this song.
verse 2 is the continuation of verse 1, I think. He tried storing material riches and then in verse 2, there is a religious allusion but mainly he's saying he owned this big mansion yet didn't feel like he belonged. it's along with the rest of the songs on Lucky Town; he was going the wrong way till he found his family.
