Land of Hope and Dreams Lyrics

Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
You don't know where you're goin'
But you know you won't be back
Darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave the rest

Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

I will provide for you
And I'll stand by your side
You'll need a good companion for
This part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past

Big wheels roll through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

This train
Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This Train
Carries whores and gamblers
This Train
Carries lost souls
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'
This Train
Carries broken-hearted
This Train
Thieves and sweet souls departed
This Train
Carries fools and kings
This Train
All aboard

This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'

Exactly. It's about the promise of America and how it can be acheived again. What did he say during the 2004 election?

"The country we hold in our hearts is waiting."

This song is gorgeous. Just gorgeous. He said he was trying to channel the Dylan epics he was so fond of, but I think I he outdid them. Just gorgeous.

this song screams one word, "America"

But in a way that says "America this is what you are supposed to be and you could be!"

This song is such a great old-style gospel rave up. I love the guitar line after the chorus. Very powerful and I imagine it unites his audiences when done live - I'd love to see him play it

At my age, this song has very special meaning. It gets to my heart right away, as I think what Bruce is doing is telling the tale of a man, late in life, who has realized his mortality. He knows he's on his last journey and wants those close to him to be assured that he's on his way to heaven and that, in time, the pain of his passing will be eased by the fact that he's in the 'land of hope and dreams'.

I always thought this song was about America but when I listened to it this morning on the way to work with my daughter she told me she thought it was about heaven. Having studied the lyrics again I think she's right. Bruce's Christian faith is a bit OTT for me (I'm an atheist) so my daughter (a Christian) now owns the album! I'm glad that Bruce is supporting Obama in the election as I've no desire to see a Mormon as president - how anyone can believe that baloney is beyond my understanding.

@NISteve

These lyrics tell the good news of the Gospels and Jesus' command to follow him and the rewards you will receive. Bruce's lyrics have long held Christian imagery but usually his metaphors are a bit more hidden.

This song and especially Rocky Ground his Catholic beliefs are out front.

Amazing songs.

What I take from this song is a simple message of getting away, going to a land of hope and dreams, a place where your dreams will not be thwarted, a land where bells of freedom ring and there's no darkness. Everyone is invited too! whores and gamblers, lost souls, saints and sinners, losers and winners... the brokenhearted.

The train mentioned in the song definitely sends powerful message, as you can imagine a big train carrying every type of person mentioned rolling through the fields where sunlight streams. It's a very gratifying song, and my take on it is that it's just a simple.

I see this song as being about new beginnings. Could apply to life after death. But I think it's a song about change, everyone is capable of change "you don't need no ticket, just get on board". Real change comes from within and you just do it.
