The End of Medicine Lyrics
The angel cries, "You bastard!"
As we analyze the accent
So look out, you rock 'n' rollers
Over forty million served
And that's a record for the master
It stood forever after
So are we, are we, are we, are we facing
The end of all, of all the drugs we're lacing?
With common sense and courtesy
And other things we thought would be the end of us but now
They won't allow us our intentions
Oh, the mother of invention
It's her pleasure to repeat with feeling:
Are we, are we, are we, are we facing
The end of all the medicine we're taking?
Somewhere in the system
There's an open-ended list
Of all the lies we tell
Unblinking, thinking
What could we be living?
Is it life
Or is it even in the realm of possibility?
You see it when you're missing
Who you came to see, is this thing
Even on and on and on?
Are we, are we, are we, are we facing
The end of all the medicine we're taking?
As we analyze the accent
So look out, you rock 'n' rollers
And that's a record for the master
It stood forever after
The end of all, of all the drugs we're lacing?
With common sense and courtesy
And other things we thought would be the end of us but now
They won't allow us our intentions
It's her pleasure to repeat with feeling:
Are we, are we, are we, are we facing
The end of all the medicine we're taking?
There's an open-ended list
Of all the lies we tell
Unblinking, thinking
What could we be living?
Is it life
Or is it even in the realm of possibility?
You see it when you're missing
Who you came to see, is this thing
Even on and on and on?
The end of all the medicine we're taking?

this song is amazing. i think it's about how nowadays there seems to be a drug for everything, how we're telling ourselves lies that we need to be on all this medication, how taking drugs is no longer a badass thing.
Love this one too. I didn't take the medicine them as literally, I actually take it to be some comment on the music industry, how bands get cleaned up or neutered, etc, by labels/the music biz. Maybe how bands/artists lose sight of what they're trying to do when they're more focused on putting out "popular music" as opposed to good music? "Record for the master," "Forty billion served," "is this thing even on" - that's how I read all this. New Porns lyrics are always so textured and compelling, there are probably a billion interpretations.
We're facing the end of medicine because no one calls it "medicine" anymore, they call it "medication". Ever noticed that?
Seriously, though, this song has amazing lyrics. I can actually understand them for once, and they really flow with the song.
As for the meaning, I agree with pretty much everything the first poster said.
I don't think it's solely about Medications. As another commenter pointed out, some of the lyrics point more towards the music industry. Otherwise those lyrics don't make much sense if it's solely about medicine.
However, why couldn't it be about the music industry and drugs? As in illegal drugs. How many famous singers and band-mates do we here about that are on drugs or have overdosed on drugs? Also, illegal drugs used to be considered "medicine". Maybe it's about a band who are quitting drugs as well.
the first time i heard this song and they said 'look out you rock n' rollers' i thought that it was a really cool david bowie-like thing to say. and then the end of this song kicked my ass
