This is, by a long shot, not the best SAGA song written--however, it came out during one of their more poppy phases, and it did all right on the singles chart. Man, I gotta submit some more lyrics for these guys...
This seems to be about someone (or some people) who finally have had it with things and pick a night to escape and break free--not sure what they're breaking free from, though.

This is about not being able to break free and escaping into vises and addictions.
I think this is a song about becoming an adult. The young person is celebrating an 18th or 21st birthday, and as if that night, they are considered old enough not to need someone running their lives or telling them what to do or how to do it
The narrator is telling someone (the listener) that sometimes just when you feel you have it the most together it's when you're ready to lose it. If that's the case they see nothing wrong with escaping-in this case the song seems to be talking about drugs but it can be getting away from it all or losing yourself in sex. It's your typical 'let's blow the world off for awhile and lose ourselves in pleasure' kind of rock song.
