Alpha Omega Lyrics
On the morning you went away
the air was humid and the sky was gray
I had boiled peanuts for breakfast from cairo, georgia
the air was wet, my face was wetter
the pink flowers along the western window made me feel better
I turned the air conditioner on
found the note on scented stationary - you were long gone
I had boiled peanuts for breakfast from cairo, georgia
I popped the top off of the aluminum can
let the brine slide down my fingers, man
it was warm, it was warm on my skin
but i felt the cold blast looming on in
I had boiled peanuts for breakfast from cairo, georgia
the air was humid and the sky was gray
the pink flowers along the western window made me feel better
I turned the air conditioner on
found the note on scented stationary - you were long gone
let the brine slide down my fingers, man
it was warm, it was warm on my skin
but i felt the cold blast looming on in

I heard John live once. He had a bit of a preamble about the Alpha couple before he did Alpha Double Negative: Going to Catalina. He said that the Alphas started out in California, then went to Nevada for a bit, then moved down to Tallahassee in Florida. If you wanted to build up a chronology of songs, placing the geography might help.
This is the final song in the "Alpha" series that started with "Alpha Double Negative; Going to Catalina" about the famed Alpha Couple. This is the bitter end of their bitter love. It has two versions, a slow and a spaztic. The spaztic version (live) is probably my favorite 'Goats song.
Does anybody know if the Alpha series is set in a chronological order and if so, anybody know which goes where? Just in order of release? I've always been curious about that.
I'm not positive how it goes myself. Alpha Omega will always be the last song in the series, and he's written several alpha albums since the release of that one, so I'd imagine that it's not all in order. It doesn't really matter, though. They may have moved accross the country, but it's the same story in each state.
I've heard that same shpiel, dagwood. He was doing an introduction to the song "Tallahassee" and described basically all you said and more. It does seem to contradict what you read in the "Protien Source of the Future...Now!" booklet.
"The series known as 'Songs from Alpha Privative' concludes here, having begun at a ski lodge some years earlier. Some deaths just will not be cheated no matter how good you get."
When he was talking about the alpha couple in that live session I heard, he said it started in southern california. I've never been down there more than a week, but I'd imagine it'd be pretty difficult to find a ski lodge in that area.
Im not an American, so forgive my geography, but dont the Rockies run all the way down California? Isnt there somewhere high enough for it to snow significantly in southern California, like further North?
yeah, big bear mountain. mistar glass is wrong about that one...you could definately find a ski lodge in socal
I can only assume the series ends in Tallahassee, where it's migrated, from the location of the peanuts. Unless the Alpha Male brought some cases with him. Not unlikely. They sound pretty foul.
Cairo is only about 30 miles from Tallahassee, and they grow a lot of peanuts around there, and they sell boiled peanuts on the side of the road, so it's very likely he had picked some up from a roadside stand.

far and away my favorite mountain goats song. a prime example of darnielle's knack for turning mundane details into heartbreaking art.
