Don't Think You're The First Lyrics
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To follow your heart
Or gaze at the stars
To stare at the night
Through the clear daylight
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To feel sorrow or shame
As you walk in the rain
Do I love you?
Yes I love you
Or I wouldn't tell you so
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To be caught in the act
Numbered and racked
Put in your place
Made to feel like a fake
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To be untouched by the time
Think you're one of a kind
Do I love you?
Yes I love you
Or I wouldn't tell you so
Don't think you're the first
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To dance with delight
From the meek to the might
As the birds in the trees
Sing their sweet melodies
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To hear a thousand violins
As the trial begins
Do I love you?
Yes I love you
Or I wouldn't tell you so
Don't think you're the last
To be tied to the mast
While you watch from afar
As your world falls apart
You hang on for help
But the rest help themselves
Don't think you're the last
To be tied to the past
While your future's controlled
By the present untold
Do I love you?
Yes I love you
Or I wouldn't tell you so
Don't think you're the first
In the whole universe
To follow your heart
Or gaze at the stars
To stare at the night
Through the clear daylight
In the whole universe
To feel sorrow or shame
As you walk in the rain
Yes I love you
Or I wouldn't tell you so
In the whole universe

I think a wonderful structural technique that we ought to draw attention to is the placing of "yes I love you" right next to "don't think you're the first"/"don't think you're the last". IE: He loves them but he's going to love other people and he has loved other people
Overall I think it's a song about accepting reality, you're not as special or individual or unique as you'd like to think. All the problems and wonderful moments you've had have been had be someone else. In the same way in having the love of this person you're not alone, he's loved others and he's going to love others after you.
i like this. Old grandfatherly/gentlemanly advice.
the sort that you hear as a six year old boy (though i've never been one) that you can relate to yourself when you're then 16, and the on to sixty.
it never leaves you and although the words were harsh they are filled with love and reassurance.
that's what this song sounds like to me, I think the singer is remembering these words himself but he's also helping somebody too.
