I know these are the lyrics on Atomship's official website, but I don't think they're right... There's a verse left out:

I agree, Nolan. He might actually be saying "fucking," but it sounds...gasp...censored! However, that makes no sense, because A--there's not a clean version of this album (it's just one version), and B--just listen to the beginning of "Friends," he screams, "Hey mama? CAN'T YOU SEE I'M FUCKING COOKING?!" So...yeah, it's hard to tell what is up with that.

Wait, I've got it now. Wind-Up records simply didn't want Atomship to be "anti-patriotic." They DID censor it! They just didn't want us to "disgrace" this foul country. No wonder. Pigs.

Either what "theotherness" said is correct, or maybe they censored it to poke fun at how censored America is...

Clearly a political song, but for those left wondering about the name...here is some food for thought!

Agent Orange was the code name for a herbicide developed for the military. The purpose of the product was to deny an enemy cover and concealment in dense terrain by defoliating trees and shrubbery where the enmy could hide. The product "Agent Orange" (a code name for the orange band that was used to mark the drums it was stored in, was principally effective against broad-leaf foliage, such as the dense jungle-like terrain found in Southeast Asia. Agent Orange was used extensively during the Vietnam war, with roughly 20 millions gallons dispersed throughout the conflict. The TCDD found in Agent Orange is thought to be harmful to man. In laboratory tests on animals, TCDD has caused a wide variety of diseases, many of them fatal. TCDD is not found in nature, but rather is a man-made and always unwanted byproduct of the chemical manufacturing process. Agent Orange was later found to be extremely contaminated with TCDD. Many believe that the goverment and chemical companies knew of the harmful side effects during the war, but kept the information quiet. Love how they placed Agent Orange right before Time for People. While it's unclear who Time for People is about, i always like to believe it is about Bush...and Agent Orange seems to give provide some basis for that.

I'll concede 'where he can you clearly hear me' and 'playing his sax to the law'- I thought the latter was a Bill Clinton reference, but repeat listening sounds more like overstressed sibilants, which the singer does a lot. In all other cases, I stand by my version above the official one as to the song's actual lyrics. I think 'waving' in the first segment was supposed to be 'writing', but he mis-sang and nobody noticed or nobody cared.

The song may be about the writer's grandfather or another significant elderly person, but the broad comments (the old dude 'yells' and 'writes', which are pretty standard old people things) suggest it's more about the aging troops of Vietnam in general- and, of course, our failure to do anything for them, because they're going away soon enough. The song only has a single- and very oblique, at that- anti-government reference, "paying his tax to the law." However, the disgust at the 'flag-wavers' may be targeted at people who are supposed to represent said flag.
