So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Recently I've been,
Hopelessly reaching
Out for this girl,
She's out of this world.
Believe me.
She's got a boyfriend
He drives me round the bend
He's in the marines,
He'd kill me.
It's been so many nights now
I find myself thinking about her now.
'Cause obviously,
She's out of my league
I'm hopin' and wishin'
She's draggin' me in and now
I know I never will be good enough for her.
No, no
Never will be good enough for her.
Gotta escape now
Get on a plane now. yeah
Afterwards lady, that's where I'll stay (yeah)
For cheating
I'll put it behind me(I'll put it behind me)
Go to a place where she can't find me. yeah.
'Cause obviously,
She's out of my league,
I'm wastin' my time
'Cause she'll never be mine
I know I never will be good enough for her.
No, no
Never will be good enough for her
She's outta my head
I never will know her again
I know I'm not good enough for her
He's good enough for her (for her, for her)
Hopelessly reaching
Out for this girl,
She's out of this world.
Believe me.
She's got a boyfriend

He's in the marines,
He'd kill me.

Oh ive decided to just ignore that quiffporn moron. He spends so much time slagging of bands that he's obviously just another loser with no life who wants a reaction. So why give him one? Anyway the song...the meanings pretty obvious (no pun intended), but its great to sing along to at their concerts. Again, not their best but this is one of those Mcfly songs thats more focused on the catchiness than the lyrics. Which is fine really, cos they have a ton of lyric-focused songs to make up for it :) But this is also great for if youre learning to play guitar, cos its fun and easy :D
