Q&A
Washington, D.C. Lyrics
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, baby
D-C!
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, baby
D-C!
Washington D.C., it's paradise to me
It's not because it is the grand ol' seat
Of precious freedom and democracy
No, no, no
It's not the greenery turning gold in fall
The scenery circling the mall
It's just, that's where my baby lives, thats all
Washington D.C., it's the greatest place to be
It's not the cherries everywhere in bloom
It's not the way they put folks on the moon
No, no, no
It's not the spectacles and pageantry
The thousand things you've got to see
It's just, that's where my baby waits for me
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, baby
D-C!
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, baby
D-C!
Washington D.C., it fits me to a T
It's not the people doing something real
It's not the way the springtime makes you feel
No, no, no
It ain't no famous name on a golden plaque
That makes me ride that railroad track
It's my baby's kiss that keeps me coming back
It's my baby's kiss that keeps me coming back!
D-C!
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, baby
D-C!
It's not because it is the grand ol' seat
Of precious freedom and democracy
No, no, no
It's not the greenery turning gold in fall
The scenery circling the mall
It's just, that's where my baby lives, thats all
It's not the cherries everywhere in bloom
It's not the way they put folks on the moon
No, no, no
It's not the spectacles and pageantry
The thousand things you've got to see
It's just, that's where my baby waits for me
D-C!
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, baby
D-C!
It's not the people doing something real
It's not the way the springtime makes you feel
No, no, no

this is probably one of my favorite MF songs. well, of course, it could be that i'm partial to it because i live in dc. AND it is incredibly cute!
being pretty familiar with stephen merritt's sentiments and style, i get the feeling the relentless accolading of dc in this song is largely sarcasm. which i get. it's an absolutely gorgeous town with lots of great culture, museums, art, unfortunately the politicians can be a bit of a buzzkill. library of congress is spectacular though.
No love for this song? Well, not too much to comment on. It's very straitforward and sweet. she likes Washington DC not for all the actualy stuff that there's but because that's where hr "baby" is. And you gotta love the cheerleader spelling.
Obviously this song extends past simply Washington DC, its a commentary on what people truly find important and makes life worth living, he virtually wrote a whole album about this..
Theres so much beauty in the world but none of it could ever come close to the internal beauty someone can invoke in you
My favorite part "It ain't no famous name on a golden plaque That makes me ride that railroad track It's my baby's kiss that keeps me coming back"
Really nails down a metaphor of life (by the train) being much more driven by love/emotions (my baby's kiss) instead of names on a plaque (knowledge/fame/etc), at least in most people.
Look up the surrogate mother experiment with monkeys
Honestly an extremely beautiful song, whereas you might see sarcasm in the listing of accolades I see immense beauty, the contrast emphasizes the pure power of love, a universe and eternal force driving humans to jump on a damn train
