The Vanishing Lyrics

Tremor of light
The sky, a porcelain wall

Landing at Heathrow, a Tuesday in the fall
You are sleeping next to me
I just let go your hand
I hope I can go through with this
I hope you understand

I leave you dreaming in row twelve
Run quickly down the escalator
At customs I am first in line
You wake
Now it's three minutes later

I am gone...

M40 night
London, a blur behind me
Leave from Heathrow at the dawn
No one will ever find me

You will look for five more days
You will trawl the city night
Then you'll make yourself forget me
I'll fade into the half-light

I am gone...

"You wake now, it's three minutes later." My, he's even got the whole thing TIMED! "Forget about me." Fine, I will! It's just terrible to ditch someone in that manner.

it sure seems cruel, doesn't it? but maybe the guy realizes the other person is only going to forget him anyway, or maybe he feels like the person doesn't really care much in the first place, so he figures it's easier to walk away than to have to have it ended later, in a more painful way.

besides that, this song is beautiful. I say that about almost every song I comment on. it makes me imagine lots of plexiglass and stainless steel, lime green furniture and blue carpeting.

I love this song, everything about it conjures up the transient image of airports and things.

One thing I noticed is that at the end of the song, the backing vocals say "Wake up. It's only a bad dream" so I think the song is only happening in one of the lovers' heads, but I'm not sure!

Ah can I please know why I wasted my ticked to see them in august, and then discovered them in september? when will they be back in NYC?

I think that aderyn is on to something with the "wake up" background vocals. Maybe it is only a dream, but is it the dream of the sleeping partner or the one that is leaving? Maybe it is also a cry out for the sleeping partner to wake up and stop the leaving partner from making the mistake of running away from his lover.

this song is pretty relatable right now. for me at least.

I think everyone is taking this in the wrong way. I'm almost convinced that the point of view isn't from a persons perspective, but some sort of emotion or feeling. It makes much more since, although it opens up the song for even more interpritation that before.

I think this song is about this guy who dates someone really great and he likes her too, but he just doesn't feel like he's in place; he feels out of place and so he just leaves. He leaves for the better of himself and for the other girl.

I suck at deciphering songs, so bare with me.

the song is a dream from the perspective of the person being left, it is narrated by the person leaving.
