This song is really quite amazing. It reminds me of the movie "the ring"... but probaly just because of the whole well thing.
i was just reading prince caspian from the chronicles of narnia and the spirit of the beech tree is referred to as 'the lady of the wood'

Anyhow. I love this song. It's a fantastic opening song. It just hits you like a brick. Except softer. It gives me shivers when I hear it. I hear Stacy's Rhoads keyboard, and her shrilling vocals, and I'm in awe. I love the line "Softly floating down on wings of fireflies"
And it's oh-so cute (haha) the lyrics, can you think of another band that says "oh no sir, its oh-so sad"? Nope. It's so cute.
This song reminded me instrisically of medieval fairy tales. I see the man as the angel of death (' ripped his wing off of his arm' fallen angel perhaps?) who has come for the lady who has is down the well. (Was she pushed? Was it suicide?) The scarecrows represent the people who stop and stare at her body, but aren't physically able to do anything.
Another interpretation would be that this man loved the woman who he finds had fallen down a well and decides to follow her in death, 'keeling forward and he fell'. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance these sort of deaths were more frequent than you might imagine.
Lyrics correction: 'Her pretty broken wrist was clutched under her fist. Her ankles were all wound about a silver gown.'
I love this song but it skeeves the hell out of me. I guess this might be obvious but to me it seems like one of those scary stories where someone just has to go look in the attic, and they die. The guy was curious about the lady of the wood, and at the end I feel like something scary happens to him.
I think this song is about this guy looking for the lady of the wood and he gose and asks a scarcrow that told him that that she was taken away some place. then he found her at a bottum of a well with a broken wrist and was wounded. Then he fell in to but the fireflys that the tiny scar crows gave him helped him by carry him down and saving the lady of the wood. I dont think she died also. But i thought the begining lyrics went like "I wouldnt care cause machines all fall apart" O.O
