Greensleeves Lyrics

Alas my love you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously;
And I have loved you oh so long
Delighting in your company.

Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my lady Greensleeves.

I have been ready at your hand
To grant whatever thou would'st crave;
I have waged both life and land
Your love and goodwill for to have.

Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my lady Greensleeves.

Thy petticoat of sendle white
With gold embroidered gorgeously;
Thy petticoat of silk and white
And these I bought gladly.

Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my lady Greensleeves.

I'm lost on how this sounds nothing like the original, it is probably the closest song to the original ever put out.

During the time this was written, green was associated with love, NOT prostitution.

this is an amazing cover of the original greensleeves ballad, it sounds so surreal, and nothing like the original!!! truely amazing!!!

I love this song, and I've heard a lot of different versions. Her voice adds the perfect tone of despair and love lost, it's beautiful.

I've heard a lot of different versions and looked for the true lyrics, and they are much better than this. This is such a great song, I always thought greensleeves and what child is this shared the same "Jesus" lyrics. I am so glad I was wrong.

It is very widely interpreted that Lady Green Sleeves is a promiscuous young woman, possibly a prostitute. In England, the color green is long associated with prostitutes, and it could also refer to green stains caused from rolling in the grass with a lover. The original version has many more verses that make it easier to believe that conclusion. It is very possible that Ms. Mckennitt meant to change the meaning to a simple story of a lost love by the verses that she chose to incorporate.
