It's actually a song written by Blades saying goodbye to his brother, who died of a drug overdose.
I suspected as much. Well not that it was about his brother but that it was about losing someone close. Describing life as a merry-go-round, always up or down. Such a beautiful song but not quite as somber as you might expect for a song about a personal tragedy. As if the song conveys a sense of loss but also a sense of relief that the person has found some peace, albeit in death.
