In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This is one of my alltime favourite songs! Anyway, this is just my opinion of what the songs is about 1st verse- He knows he is about to die, and is reading the bible, which leads into the 2nd verse, where he realises when he dies, he wants to go to heaven, but to do that he will need to repent his sins. I have no idea what the above means- maybe a dead girl, who he wants to go to Heaven for, and he is rembering a dream about her, and it is what he thinks Heaven will be like? Then in the 3rd verse, I think he reads on, and has a moment of clarity where he realises every thing he has done wrong. Then "In dreams unitl my death, I will wonder on", I don't know... could be a reference to the "sky was bruised" place, he will wonder through that in his dreams with the girl?
I think this is a key verse.<br /> <br /> The lyrics "The sky was bruised, the ground was bled", quite clearly describes an earth and mind shattering place of experience, that he now WANTS to return to.<br /> It's my belief that as a youth with his religious belief intact the world as he knew it was alot harsher. And now that he's dying, he wants a return to those harsher times to inject his life with hope and meaning, but is ultimately unable to. (the chorus)
