Go Rest High On That Mountain Lyrics
I know your life on earth was troubled.
And only you could know the pain.
You weren't afraid to face the devil.
You were no stranger to the name.
(Chorus)
Go rest high on that mountain.
Cause, Son your work on earth is done.
Go to heaven a shoutin'.
Love for the father and the son.
Oh, how we cryed the day you left us.
Gathered round your grave to grieve.
Wish I could see the angels faces.
When they hear your sweet voice say.
(Chorus)
(Musician solo)
(Chorus)
Go to Heaven a Shoutin'
Love for the Father and the son.
And only you could know the pain.
You weren't afraid to face the devil.
You were no stranger to the name.
Go rest high on that mountain.
Cause, Son your work on earth is done.
Go to heaven a shoutin'.
Love for the father and the son.
Gathered round your grave to grieve.
Wish I could see the angels faces.
When they hear your sweet voice say.
(Musician solo)
(Chorus)
Love for the Father and the son.

The song began as a tribute to Vince's friend, Keith Whitley who died of alcoholism but he could not finish it. When his brother, Bob, committed suicide a few years later, he finished it. It is a tribute to both Keith and Bob.
The lines "You weren't afraid to face the devil, You were no stranger to the rain" reference Keith's song, "I'm No Stranger to the Rain."
I honestly believe this is a really great song. I wouldn't listen to it a lot b/c its depth and meaning then would be lost. The lyrics somehow just carry me away. It is used a lot at funerals, which probably stems from its words, but I think it is mostly about Christ.
@nerdy_scarlett This is incorrect. It's a tribute to Vince's friend Kieth Whitley and his brother, Bob.

I believe this song was written about his brother, who was had drug problems and ended up dying very young. It is an beautiful song about faith, hope and the great forever.
the lyrics above are actually wrong...in line four he sings you are no stranger to the RAIN...and the line that says "when they hear your sweet voice say" it actually gos "when they hear your sweet voice sing" And this song was written by Vince Gill as a tribute to Keith Whitley...
THIS SONG IS WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE SO MUCH , AND THEN BOOM THEY ARE GONE IN A BLINK OF AN EYE, THE PAIN IS REAL, THE HURT IS STRONG, NOT FOR ONLY THE PARENTS( ALOT WORSE FOR THEM) BUT FOR ALL OF THE FAMILY. IT'S ABOUT GOD SAYING TIME FOR YOU TO COME HOME, HIS WORK WAS DONE, WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT AND WE DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. THE UNDERSTANDING WILL NEVER HAVE A MEANING. UNTIL WE ARE UP THERE WITH THEM. R.I..P. J
This song was meant for his brother, but ended up being a double tribute.
They do say PAIN not RAIN but you're right Mega, about them saying SING not SAY. This song was written for his brother who died young because of a drug problem.
@TRussMu It's Rain. It's for Kieth Whitley too. No Stranger to the Rain.

We played it at the conclusion of my mother's funeral services. Its lyrics express so perfectly the overwhelming emotions felt at the loss of a loved one. "Oh how we cried the day you left us" helped us feel less alone and lost during this very personal yet universal experience. Mom worked hard and faced much adversity; the song helped express hope that she is now with the angels and feels less weary, now happy and at peace. Love lives on.
funeral song. one of the most moving songs of all time.
This song means so much to me.. My aunt died 2 years ago october the 8th and reminds me so much of her..This reminds me so much of my life because it hurt my family so much the day she died ("oh how we cried the day you left us") and ("gathered around your grave to grieve") this is so true! I got saved on her grave .. i miss her alot.. R.I.P ~Linda~
