Knowhere Lyrics

Slow voices speaking through a hurricane
Said that I wanted but I lied
You're looking good and man I can't complain
Ghost on the road at night
Seen him out walking he's just skin and bone
I don't see nothing in her eyes
Some call it healthy like a home from home
I'm dreaming different skies

I don't know where I
I don't know what I'm
Supposed to do now, get it on all night
I don't know where I
I don't know what I
It seems to me boy that you're doing all right
I don't know where I
I don't know what I
Long way to go now keep it all inside

36 hours but my mind is fresh
Live for the moment then I'm gone
Suck on that sympathy and feel the rush
Go on my blue eyed son

I don't know where I
I don't know what i'm
Supposed to do, now get it on all night
I don't know where I
I don't know what I
It seems to me boy that you're doing all right
I don't know where I
I tell you what I
Long way to go now keep it all inside

I don't know where I
I don't know what I'm
Supposed to do now, get it on all night
I don't know where I
I don't know what I
It seems to me boy that you're doing all right
I don't know where I
I don't know what I
Long way to go now keep it all inside

I think he talks about endless journey... "36 hours but my mind is fresh".. basically keep walking look at positives of the world, suck on sympathies and kindness

keep walking... no matter what happens to you... "Seen him out walking he's just skin and bone I don't see nothing in her eyes"

but you still look good, be positive: You're looking good and man I can't complain

Keep going keep walking: Go on my blue eyed son. Sometimes you will be confused dont know what to do.. lost direction: I don't know where I I don't know what i'm Supposed to do, now get it on all night I don't know where I I don't know what I

But, I keep positivie keep going: It seems to me boy that you're doing all right

You got a long way to go.. so keep positive, feel good on sympathy and kindness but keep going.. thats LIFE.. keep going.. Thats what I feel.. may be wrong, but it looks positive to me. Cheers, Mukesh Pandya, India

A New Day At Midnight was written and recorded just after David's father died of cancer in 2001, and most songs seem to relate to that (it was dedicated to him, after all). Within that context, I think the song becomes much more straight forward. The first verse would be entering the hospital room. He says he wanted in, as soon as he does, he realizes he lied when he sees his father "just skin and bones".

The chorus becomes a lament for a lost parent; "I don't know where I / I don't know what I'm / Supposed to do now / Get it on all night", while the end give the oft-repeated line about "being strong" and "keeping it all inside" when face with the death of a parent, especially for boys/men.

The second verse gives a bit of that odd and often culturally misunderstood feeling of almost ecstasy when faced with grief. 36 hours later, he's "suck[ing] on the sympathy and feel[ing] the rush", and though it might not feel right, it helps get out of the moment and move on, even if he's still not sure how.

It's actually an interesting song in its purity of relaying grief and moving on from it.
