For some reason this song reminds meof the book "The Cloud of Unknowing," by person or persons unknown. I've never read it, but that's what "maddening cloud" means to me.
This song, from my understanding, is about a troubled relationship. The lady involved, is struggling with depression or it could be a drug issue as well.

seems to say, I'm yours in every way, if you'll let it be so. I'll be/do anything for you if it will help you.

This part of the song is very powerful and it hits me pretty hard. Caring about someone and feeling like there isn't anything that can be done to help them when they need it, is a terrible terrible feeling.
"And you can take me back But you must be alone"
Her depression/drug problem is too much for her to handle and it's effecting him just as much. They're both in a maddening cloud hehe.
