Something Fine Lyrics

The papers lie there helplessly
In a pile outside the door
I've tried and tried, but I just can't remember what they're for
The world outside is tugging like a beggar at my sleeve
Oh, that's much too old a story to believe

And you know that it's taken its share of me
Even though you take such good care of me
Now you say "Morocco" and that makes me smile
I haven't seen Morocco in a long, long while
The dreams are rolling down across the places in my mind
And I've just had a taste of something fine

The future hides and the past just slides
England lies between
Floating in a silver mist so cold and so clean
California's shaking like an angry child will
Who has asked for love and is unanswered still

And you know that I'm looking back carefully
ÔCause I know that there's still something there for me
But you said "Morocco" and you made me smile
And it hasn't been that easy for a long, long while
And looking back into your eyes I saw them really shine
Giving me a taste of something fine
Something fine

Now if you see Morocco I know you'll go in style
I may not see Morocco for a little while
But while you're there I was hoping you might keep it in your mind
To save me just a taste of something fine

This might be the most beautifully crafted songs ever made. Unbelievable.

Lyrically, one of my least favorite songs on the album. Musically, it's alright, nothing special. Don't know why it's gotten this much praise from these other commenters.

The song is written when Jackson Browne is in his early 20\'s and beginning to be aware that people who will end up having meant a lot to him are passing through his life and will soon be out of his immediate circle of associates. In that way it reminds me of "Bob Dylan\'s Dream". I love both these songs.

I saw Jackson Browne in concert the other night he told a story about this song. He was visiting England supposed to do a recording session but there was an earthquake in California and it was delayed while people were trying to contact family "back home" and while waiting he was staying at a place someone had lent him through Stephen Stills but it was also lent to someone else at the same time... they became "very close" the time he spent there and he wrote this song for her. "I think she was an actress..." he said sarcastically (I think?) But have no idea who she was?

It's about Browne's 10-day London affair with actor and photographer Sally Sasche. She was in The Trip with Peter Fonda and was tour photographer for CSNY. She's now a California artist. She told Browne she was going to Morocco - but actually went to Amsterdam! See my blogpost: https://soothfairy.com/2015/03/29/jackson-browne-and-daryl-hannah/#sasche
