"Heart of darkness" as written by and Mark Linkous....
She laid her head
On my chest
As the sun burned
Down the west
There's one thing we still got
This one last dance in this parking lot

Oh yeah, I, I got a heart of darkness
Oh yeah, I, I got a heart of darkness

Then she woke up
Into the fire
And the flames kept
Dancing higher
Satan would laugh at her screams
Then she woke up from her dreams

Oh yeah, I, I got a heart of darkness
Oh yeah, I, I got a heart of darkness

General Commentthis is by far my favorite sparklehorse song. its simplicity and imagery are what does it for me...i can picture sitting in a parking lot watching a sunset as the love of my life lays her head on my chest and falls asleep. it is such an amazing scene to imagine.

it seems to me that the girl's dreams are being affected by the man's heart of darkness. she falls alseep on his chest, and heart, and dreams about waking up in hell with fire all around her and satan laughing. because the girl fell asleep on his heart, the darkness caused her to have a nightmare.

another version of this song is called "Heart of Darkness (Wiggly)" can be found on the Chords I've Known EP. "wiggly" most likely refers to the different guitar effect on this track.
