Painbirds Lyrics

goddamn it's so very hot
supposed to come a rain but it's not

oh yeah
here come the painbirds
oh yeah
here come the painbirds

spiral down those hateful dears
between our skins and burning spheres

oh yeah
here come the painbirds
oh yeah
here come the painbirds

goddamn it's so very hot / spiral down those hateful dears
supposed to come a rain but it's not / between our skins and burning spheres

oh yeah
here come the painbirds
oh yeah
here come the painbirds
oh yeah
here come the painbirds
oh yeah

This song is seeing all of the signs of something that is about to come that is going to be devastating. Instead of the cool rain that will calm everything down, the birds signal something bad on the horizon. I think the skins and burning spheres are meant as humans-- skins being obvious and spheres being red eyes. The girl in a relationship is having an issue that the man sees as ruining them both and knows it's only a matter of time...

Here come the painbirds....

Love this song.

The first line pops on my head very frequently , especially in days like these in a town like mine. Makes me think of that feeling of so much exhaustion that you get divided between sadness and angryness. Great song.

I was going to use this as the starter song for a mix that I'm making... and I might just... but, anyway, yeah, I like this song. It's simple, yet expressive. Perhaps about pain and frustration...?

My Interpretation

It’s about chronic pain honestly. It’s quite common for pain flares to occur when weather is changing. And sometimes the rain resists and you’re wishing for it to just let it happen and go to a less horrendous baseline..

Of course people can relate to this in different ways, as different kinds of pain. But I always thought this was perfectly describing some states of chronic pain (which he very much struggled with)

The painbirds are vultures, or carrion birds. They spiral down, like carrion birds, divide the flesh, typically finish off creatures who are still barely alive. Hopefully this gives some people more insight into this song. Perhaps somebody dying in the heat, waiting for rain. Run with it.

@painblanket there are also birds called “rainbirds” and this could be a play on that, as well. Instead of rainbirds, the speaker gets painbirds.
