Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

When I was in Alabama a lot of people were paying attention to what Jason was doing and I'd imagine they're very proud of him right now. He found what he was looking for and put out some incredible music, something we all knew he could do.
Can't wait for the next album. Dirks Bentley is a fucking poser. He has people write songs and it's a money thing. Grammys are a circle jerk. Critics I have mixed feelings but they have taste. Critical acclaim or its aggregate is really the best thing you could hope for as a songwriter. Unless you just want to be a douche and out lawyer people who hurt your egos. Someone that needs people to tell him how good he is. Fucking faggot.
