Lately Lyrics

Lately you seem like another language
Are you in trouble, are you in trouble again
And you know how they say
The past is a foreign country
How can we go there
How can we go where we once went

Have I been standing here for so long
Natura's found a way of telling you that it was going wrong

So which way
Do I go to get out of here
Avoiding land mines, and all the other stuff round here
Replacing Hercules with the heroic sounds of Formby
Remove the tunics touch, stood aside from the putch
Stood aside from history

Have I been standing here for so long
Natura's found a way of telling you that it was going wrong

Through the Kategaat, maybe Outer Java
Oh did you wonder if these days will stay true
All through the years, all through the dead scenes
All through the memories, across the memories, melodies, melodies

Have I been standing here for so long
Natura's found a way of telling you that it was going wrong

Do you like my megalithic rock?
Do you like my prehistoric Rock?
Do you like my teutonic Rock?
Do you like my hygienic rock?
Do you like my sterile rock?
Do you like my Megalithic Rock?

Yeah!

"the past is a foreign country" is the first line of The Go-Between, a book by L P Hartley ; i would agree with prettybaby's meaning...there are a number of friends I have drifted apart from over the years and no amount of effort is likely to re-kindle the friendship.

When BSP used to do this track live as an end to their show, they used to extend it well beyond the 14 minutes on the album version...euphoric is the only description I can give.

it's great when a 14 minute song still feels too short

Dude, I thought he was saying cock. I mean I totally knew he wasn't, but I guess I wanted him to be in a slight way.

This song is just beautiful though.

On a personal note (I suppose), I always related this song to depression and it's roots. I've found that depressed people often seem "like another language" and their history needs to be revisited to set things straight. Also, things can often turn to sh*t (landmines) and it's very difficult to recuperate without something significant (and negative) occurring.

In an interview Yan said that it was an epic about a British soldiers experience in the second world war. Personally I can see it working for that or a breakup, interestingly enough. I have to give it to them, though... at the end, its all just noise...
