David is David Eisenbach, a teacher at Manhattan School of Music (or whatever it's called, heh). At the beginning of the song, she sings "hcabnesie", his surname backwards. :D
I wonder if there aren't very many entries, because her lyrics are pretty straight forward. This was the first song I heard from Nellie McKay.

Oh I forgot to say what this song is about. I read somewhere that she said this song was about how she "song stalked" this guy that lived in her apartment building named David. This sounds right when matched with the lyrics (david don't you hear through the wall) and becomes more apparent with the line "david dear I'm just down the hall." The fact that she had a crush on someone in her building but never talking somehow makes this song sweet in a way. I love Nellie!!!
Sounds like a semi-depressed wait for David-down-the-hall to ring her, possibly after being stood up by him.
