Better Version Lyrics
Excuse the mess
I didn't see you from behind
I caught a glimpse
But the reflection's only mine
It's almost like I'm paralyzed and locked outside myself
What I don't need is to concede because I won't be someone else
I am not perfect and I don't claim to be
And if that's what you wanted
Well then I'm so sorry
[Chorus:]
How about a better version of the way that I am?
How about a better version that makes me understand?
How about a better version of the way that I am?
The way I look, The way I speak,
How about a better version of me?
Excuse the wall, I put it up from time to time
A silver shade, but the design is all mine
It's just a maze that everyday I seem to be stuck in
It never seems to fade away but I pray for the day it ends
I am not perfect and I don't claim to be
And if that's what you wanted
Well then I'm so sorry
[Chorus]
Show me my vital signs until I'm realigned [Repeat: x4]
[Chorus]
I didn't see you from behind
I caught a glimpse
But the reflection's only mine
It's almost like I'm paralyzed and locked outside myself
What I don't need is to concede because I won't be someone else
I am not perfect and I don't claim to be
And if that's what you wanted
Well then I'm so sorry
How about a better version of the way that I am?
How about a better version that makes me understand?
How about a better version of the way that I am?
The way I look, The way I speak,
How about a better version of me?
A silver shade, but the design is all mine
It's just a maze that everyday I seem to be stuck in
It never seems to fade away but I pray for the day it ends
And if that's what you wanted
Well then I'm so sorry

I don't think it's about suicide, but about feeling "not good enough" for people. And that is the worst feeling ever. This song is just a big Fuck you to the people who feel you aren't good enough, because he isn't going to change.
this song is about changing yourself to fit someone else's standards and he's saying he wont. because that's not who he is. he mocks them with the chorus. offering what they want, but knowing he wont ever be that.
^ i aggree. but also... he wants to not have to fit in but still fit in.. ya know what i mean
yeah, I agree with NothingIsPermanent. and I never thought about the chorus being a mock....good thinkin. Shinedown is by far one of my favorite bands. these 4 guys are so talented. how can you to listen to Brent's voice and not get chills? just hope they don't become total media whores and amount to another MTV sterotype.
i may be a weird person in thinking the songs of shinedown are motivational, but this song motivates not conform to others, become a typical run-of-the-mill person, with no outstanding qualities
The chorus is definately mocking, and almost sarcastic in a sense. The song i believe is written to one of two people; 1, a girlfriend. We all know how a girl or even guy can get into you enough that they are changing you into what they want you to be. 2. Parents. Parents i think are sometimes the worst people at doing something like trying to get you to change. They seem to want you to be everything that you are not.
He could be speaking to a specific person or just society in general. He's saying (obiviously) that he never said he was perfect so they shouldn't expect him to be and also that he's not going to conform to their standards. I love the verse about the wall because to me, he's talking about how he doesn't want to be a part of it all b/c it's all fake so he puts up this "wall" but he doesn't like it. He wants the superficiality to end and for people to see who he really is without having to worry about them judging him unnecessarily.
i dont understand how thsi song doesnt have more comments!
ha i absolutely love it. its saying that he doesnt want to fit in or change how he is. but even still, he wants to be liked for who he is at the same time.
i feel the same way...
I think he's talking to society. This is the anthem of non-conformity.
I can't believe this has so few comments. It's one of my favorite songs. I sing it in my head whenever someone pisses me off. Or when I'm walking through the mall and I see the kids walking in groups being "different" while looking the same. Stupid kids.
Rock on Shinedown.
